In November 1990 Indo-American Hybrid Seeds (IAHS), one of the largest and very innovative horticultural enterprises of its kind in India, celebrated its silver jubilee year in the town of Bangalore, India. On the occasion of this silver jubilee of IAHS an International Seminar on 'New Frontiers in Horticulture' was organized from 25-28th of November 1990 at the Ashok Radisson Hotel in Bangalore. IAHS was almost fully responsible in terms of organization and financially for this International Seminar. Assisted by an International Scientific Advisory Board, the organizing committee, all members of the company IAHS, really did a great job. I would like to thank in particular Mr. Mammohan Attavar (the company's founder) and Mr. Sri N.K. Bhat (partner of the company), respectively chairman and treasurer of the organizing committee, for their organizational and financial support in organizing this conference. Very special words of thanks go to my colleague editor, Dr. Jitendra Prakash, Secretary Organizing committee and Director of Biotechnology - IAHS, who was really the spill in the whole organization of our very successful conference.

Project Report from the year 2014 in the subject African Studies - Miscellaneous, grade: 2, Kuvempu University, language: English, abstract: Bijapur is the land of an ancient city. During the period of Chalukya’s of Kalyani it was known as Vijayapura (City of victory). The Bijapur district has an area of 10,541 km2. The district is found in association with barren rocky/stony wastes within notified forest boundaries with scrubs. The present botanical survey resulted in to 257 flowering plant species, (including cultivars) under 219 genera and 68 families. Among the total number of species, the leading families found in the campus are Poaceae, Fabaceae, Caesalpiniaceae. Among these, Salvia aegyptica L. is very rarely distributed and only confined to Bijapur district. Beside this, Indigofera hochstetteri Baker, was relocated in the campus. The floristic diversity information provides complete picture of different species available in various seasons and associated faunal diversity. Field observations indicated that the present study area is devoid of tall or big trees due to barren rocky/stony wastes land. Furthermore, based on present survey we are recommended that more number of tree/shrub species must be planted and it should be proper monitoring in future by concerned authorities.

The book provides an overview of the various types of forests occurring in the Indian state of Karnataka. Some of the most magnificent tropical forests of the Western Ghats are found here, including evergreen, semi-evergreen, moist deciduous, dry deciduous, thorn, shola, swamp and mangrove. Although scattered information about these forests is available, such information for the whole state is not available in the form of a comprehensive document. The book, while providing district-wise information about Karnataka’s forests, also dwells upon the interplay of different factors that have led to the formation and transformation of these forests. It critically analyzes the salient features about tropical forests, their past management and present status; this is relevant not only to Karnataka’s forests but also to the tropical forests of peninsular India, in particular, and Indian forests in general. The book provides a brief description about some 325 tree species—some endemic to the Western Ghats, some stretching from Australia to Africa and many pan-India—touching upon their ecology, habitat, field characteristics, tips for identification and utilization, including traditional medicinal uses. These trees represent a very wide spectrum of the trees from tropical forests.
