Excerpt from Forest Mensuration With the advent of high stumpage prices, the owner of woodland will be inclined to consider, under many circumstances, the advisability of forest-husbandry - an idea which was as preposterous in past decades of superabundance of timber as the raising of beef cattle, some sixty years ago, in the prairies then abounding in buffalo. Financially considered, a proper outcome of forest-husbandry is and must be based on a proper application of the theories and principles involved in forest mensuration. I shall be deeply grateful to a kind reader who, discovering mistakes or incongruities in the following paragraphs, will take the trouble of sending me a timely hint. Most truly. Excerpt from Forest Mensuration: Tables for Measuring Logs, Trees and the Growth of Stands Forest Mensuration of the White Pine, a booklet contain ing most Of the data on the White pine included in this bulletin. A second edition was published in 1911, and as that is now exhausted a third edition seems necessary. Since the original investigation of the white pine was made the Department has also collected similar data on other species, and the Depart ment Of Forestry at Harvard University has in its research work published a large amount of information along similar lines. It seemed to the Commissioner of Conservation that these tables, many of which are very valuable and interesting to the forest owner, should be made available for use Of the general public by including them with the original material. Director R. T. Fisher of the Harvard Forest has very graciously accepted this suggestion, and has turned his material over to us for use in this bulletin. TO Mr. H. 0. Cook, m.f., the author of the original bulletin on White pine mensuration, has been assigned the task Of compiling and editing the present publication. Excerpt from Handbook of Field and Office Problems in Forest Mensuration The problems in this handbook were originally prepared as an aid to the laboratory instruction in forest mensuration at the University of Washington, and were first published by the authors in 1915. Numerous changes and addi tions were made in this edition, particularly with reference to making them more generally useful to the practical field and Office men and more generally applicable to all sections of the country. In the few instances where they are not applicable they can readily be made so by slight modifications at the instance of the instructor in charge. Excerpt from Handbook on Forest Mensuration of the White Pine in Massachusetts: How to Estimate Standing Timber, Log Scales, Volume Tables, Yield Tables, Financial Rotations, Growth Tables, Thinnings, Etc The expenses compounded at 4 per cent. And subtracted from the gross returns leave the highest net income with a fifty-year rotation. At 5 per cent. The rotation is fifty years and the net profits are $248. At 6 per cent. The net profit is reduced to $158. Higher rates of per cent. Would still further reduce the net income, and would also shorten the rotation. In this connection one must note this fact, that the net profits are over and above the regular interest returns on the money invested, and also note, in considering these profits, that the stumpage price of pine, here the gross returns, is constantly advancing, while the average rate of interest on safe investments is constantly falling. These two factors would tend to greatly increase the net profits as time goes ou. The last table, on financial rotation, is in the form bf a summary and a means of comparison, because a range Of values is given to the land and to the cost of planting. Bl decreasing the value of the land, by doing the planting mo cheaply, or by using a smaller rate of interest, the n profits are increased and the rotation lengthened. 001 versely, by increasing any or all of these items the n income and the rotation are reduced. This change in to tion is not apparent from the tables, but would be if rotation were given for every year, instead of for five-y periods. Excerpt from Forest Policy No-where more than in the United States is all public policy meant to be dictated by the people. For the benefit of the people and for the benefit of American forestry, a handbook might come in good stead giving the principles and the effects of a truly American forest policy. The present treatise, the contents of which are tabulated on pages 8, 9 and 10, does not pretend to fill the place of a comprehensive handbook: It is intended, primarily, for the use of the students attending the Biltmore Forest School; it forms the last part of an encyclopedic textbook of forestry (comprising silviculture, utilization, finance, mensuration and working plans) written by the author since 1898 on behalf of the Biltmore Forest Sch-001.
