My thesis is that there is a direct relationship between our life journeys and Spirit. In the process of living our lives and evolving spiritually, we move through many dimensions of being. This inner journeying reflects in the world. “Forming the Future” implies an individual action that shapes the future. It contains the idea that an individual is not powerless to shape his or her own destiny. When I think of Forming the Future, I feel happy, and in saying those words, the mark is raised of all that is possible to achieve. As a mantra it is a postulate in my consciousness for the magic that happens when spirit, soul, and body are in complete alignment. It is a remembrance of an experience of total surrender to something greater than myself.

Hope and future are not the terms with which James Joyce has usually been read, but this book paints a picture of Joyce's fiction in which hope and future assume the primary colours. Rando explores how Joyce's texts, as early as Dubliners and A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, delineate a complex hope that is oriented toward the future with restlessness, dissatisfaction, and invention. He examines how Joyce envisions alternatives to the prevailing conventions of hope throughout his works and, in Ulysses and Finnegans Wake, develops formal techniques of spatializing hope to contemplate it from all sides. Casting fresh light on the ways in which hope animates key aspects of Joyce's approach to literary content and form, Rando moves beyond the limitations of negative critique and literary historicism to present a Joyce who thinks agilely about the future, politics, and possibility.

Originally published in 1973, the nature of the sixth form and the objectives of sixth-form schooling were important issues in the field of education at the time. For total war, during most of the twentieth century, meant conflict between imperial nation states; it did not include the violence those states routinely visited on colonial subjects during peacetime. Tacking back and forth between metropole and colony, between world war and police action, Saint-Amour describes the interwar refashioning of a world system of violence-production, one that remains largely intact in our own moment of perpetual interwar.
