Excerpt from Political Economy Political eoonomy is, and has been for some years, in a transitional state, which is proof of its vitality. On the one side it is becoming more abstract, and on the other side it is becoming more realistic. The two movements are not in the least Opposed, unless in the sense that they act and react on each other incessantly to the great advance ment of the study. Much modern Economic science is being increasingly assimilated in form and method to the Natural sciences. In chemical and physical labora tories which can pretend to any distinction realistic researching never stops; but speculation as regards the fundamentals of chemistry and physics continue and must continue. In the great laboratory of the world a multitude of realistic researches remain to be made by economists, and it is only as they are made that the science Of economics will develop satisfactorily; but to attack the ultra-abstract and mathematical economists on that account, in the supposed interests of realism, is suicidal. The Introduction will make it clear that the author makes no claim to originality or priority with respect to anything that it contains. It is not a history; and the question it is concerned with is not who first made any given application of the "marginal" theory to Economics, but what are the main applications of that theory inevitably demanded by the facts. The general absence of references or acknowledgments, therefore, must not in any case be regarded as an implied claim on the author's part to a special property in the argument or illustration in question. But whereas this general explanation will, I hope, clear me from the charge of ingratitude, or worse, with reference to the great masters and the published works on Economics, it cannot absolve me from the duty of registering some few of the personal obligations under which I have from time to time been laid during the many years over which the direct and indirect preparations for this work have extended. In writing its pages, I have been Well aware that the object sought is the most difficult at which an economist can aim. Whether this effort to reach the minds of pupils of fifteen, sixteen or seventeen years has been successful, will only be learned on actual trial. In preparing a text-book for students in the period of life indicated, I have not thought it necessary to make the work childish. It is no Primer of Political Economy which is here offered but a substantial course of study in this vitally important subject.
