Framework For Strengthening Health Emergency Preparedness In Cities And Urban Settings

This guidance document aims to support leaders, policy-makers and decision makers in both national and local authorities, who work on strengthening health emergency preparedness in cities and urban settings. Building on the key aspects that authorities should consider it proposes possible actions and approaches, that when adapted to different local contexts, will contribute to enhanced prevention, preparedness, and readiness for health emergencies in cities and urban settings for a robust response and eventual recovery. It supplements other existing WHO guidance and tools on urban preparedness, in particular the WHO Framework for Strengthening health emergency preparedness in cities and urban settings.

This report documents proceedings and outcomes of a virtual technical working group on "Advancing Health Emergency Preapredness in Cities and Urban Settings in COVID-19 and Beyond", co-hosted by the World Health Organization and the Government of the Republic of Singapore and held from February to April 2021. The report is useful for leaders, policymakers and partners working at national and local levels on improving health emergency preparedness in urban areas.

This policy brief describes the need to integrate rehabilitation into all-hazard health emergency preparedness, readiness, response and resilience. It provides a summary of the current situation, outlines existing evidence, describes how existing global guidelines and resolutions support the integration of rehabilitation, and proposes the steps needed to integrate rehabilitation. The objective of this publication is to raise awareness of key policy and decision makers of the importance of integrating rehabilitation into emergency preparedness, readiness, response and resilience, and to provide them with an outline of the practical steps needed in to support decision making – with a strong emphasis on preparedness. The intended audience is policy makers and service leads working in the area of health emergency preparedness, readiness, response and resilience, and service leads working in the area of rehabilitation.

Inoculating Cities: Case Studies of the Urban Response of the COVID-19 Pandemic uses detailed case studies to document and describe how cities located in high, middle and low-income countries responded to the COVID-19 pandemic. City governments and municipal authorities exist and operate in extremely varied contexts (i.e., socioeconomic, demographic, legal and governance, etc.) and intentionally documenting the experiences in these different contexts provides guidance to decision-makers for future preparedness and response activities. This volume highlights the innovative solutions throughout the pandemic as described by the people who designed and implemented pandemic response efforts in their cities. Effective action on urban health requires that decision-makers have a clear picture of the state of health and well-being of their constituents. Critical to this is the generation of data and its translation into robust evidence that can help analyse problems, prioritise actions, guide investment, and monitor and evaluate.
