From a New York Times bestselling author and Caldecott-honor winning artist comes an exuberant illustrated story about playing dress up, having fun, and feeling free. The boy loves to be naked. He romps around his house naked and wild and free. Until he romps into his parents' closet and is inspired to get dressed. First he tries on his dad's clothes, but they don't fit well. Then he tries on his mom's clothes, and wow! The boy looks great. He looks through his mom's jewelry and makeup and tries that on, too. When he's discovered by his mother and father, the whole family (including the dog!) get in on the fun, and they all get dressed together. This charming and humorous story was inspired by bestselling and award-winning author Peter Brown's own childhood, and highlights nontraditional gender roles and self-expression.

Two generations--one out of college and one a New York Police Department detective--find it difficult to see eye to eye as they try to make a difference and save their rapidly changing neighborhood from ruthless politicians, a racist real estate speculator, drug dealers, and a terrorist. VICTOR ROMERO, a recent college graduate living on what remains of his loans, has aspirations of fulfilling his dream of buying a building in his Lower East Side neighborhood and maintain affordable rents. Unfortunately, a ruthless real estate speculator, and racist, named Rudolph Archer, a.k.a. Archie Bunker, has plans to the contrary. Victor's uncle, MITCHELL LEÓN, a middle-aged detective trying to make a difference in blue, moves back into the same Lower East Side neighborhood and is drawn into an unwanted high-profile homicide, and corrupt election, that is somehow linked to Victor's battle with Rudolph and, maybe, even the mayor and big business. Mitchell and Victor take a Dantean journey into the inferno that is New York City politics, and find that they are inextricably linked with very ambitious women and men--one of whom is a deadly international terrorist--in a game that adds new meaning to the "usual suspects" and operating in "the gray area" of life, lechery and the law... in a game that could get them both killed.

Dave Meggyesy had been an outside linebacker with the St. Louis Cardinals for seven years when he quit at the height of his career to tell about the dehumanizing side of the game?about the fraud and the payoffs, the racism, drug abuse, and incredible violence. The original publication of Out of Their League shocked readers and provoked the outraged response that rocked the sports world in the 1970s. But his memoir is also a moving description of a man who struggled for social justice and personal liberation. Meggyesy has continued this journey and remains an active champion for players? rights through his work with the National Football League Players Association (NFLPA). He provides a preface for this Bison Books edition.

On the night of October 8, 1871, a whirlwind of fire swept through northeastern Wisconsin, destroying the bustling frontier town of Peshtigo. Trees, buildings, and people burst into flames. Metal melted. Sand turned into glass. People thought the end of the world had come. When the “tornado of fire” was over, 2,500 people were dead, and Peshtigo was nothing but a smoking ruin. It was the deadliest wildfire in U.S. history. The Great Peshtigo Fire: Stories and Science from America’s Deadliest Firestorm explores the history, science, and legacy of the 1871 Peshtigo Fire at a fourth-grade reading level. Readers will learn about the history of settlement, agriculture, and forestry in 19th-century Wisconsin. This illuminating text covers a diverse range of topics that will enrich the reader’s understanding of the Peshtigo Fire, including the building and land-use practices of the time that made the area ripe for such a fire, the weather patterns that fostered widespread fires throughout the upper Midwest in the summer and fall of 1871, and exciting first-person accounts that vividly bring the `victims’ stories to life. Connections made between the Peshtigo Fire and the history of fire prevention in the United States encourage critical thinking about issues that remain controversial to this day, such as planned burns and housing development restrictions near forested areas. The Great Peshtigo Fire: Stories and Science from America’s Deadliest Firestorm will inform and captivate its readers as it journeys through the horrifying history of the Peshtigo Fire.

A Dress in a Window is a collection of short stories about love, coincidences, and fate. What the readers are saying: What an enjoyable short story collection! Marie Astor has a real gift for storytelling. This collection has romance, everyday life vignettes and even a sprinkle of magic. An entertaining, fun read. While the subject of the stories varies from romance to everyday life to a bit of satire, I liked the fact that all stories share a hopeful ending, which is something that I found to be uplifting and enjoyable. A wonderful collection of short stories with real characters and substance. I just finished Lucky Charm, a contemporary romance by this author, and thought I'd give her short story collection a try. I loved the characters and the richly plotted stories. I absolutely loved this short story collection: my favorites are A Dress in a Window and A Chance Encounter. If you enjoy love stories, take a chance on A Chance Encounter and Other Stories! This is my second book by Marie Astor. I also read LUCKY CHARM and loved it as well.
