Excerpt from Court Life of the Second French Empire Nearly every royal palace of any antiquity has its ghost. Hampton Court has three - those of Katherine Howard, Jane Seymour, and Mrs. Penn (nurse of Edward VI.). The old Schloss of Berlin is haunted by the White Lady, Agnes of Orlamunde, who was buried alive in its vaults, and whose appearance always forebodes death to some member of the Prussian Royal House. Further, a spectral Capuchin, connected perhaps with the monastery where the Hapsburgs have so long been buried, is said to flit at times along the corridors of the Imperial Hofburg at Vienna. In France the Palace of the Tuileries was likewise haunted by a familiar spirit. The Little Red Man, who, although he mostly remained unseen and unheard while he prowled through the splendid chambers, considerately revealed his presence every now and again in order to foretell some great change or disaster. Occasionally, when there was nobody of any consequence at the Tuileries, the Little Red Man went roving. He followed the ruler of the time to other palaces and places. He once journeyed as far as Egypt to advise General Bonaparte to return to France. He also visited the cliffs of Boulogne to foretell the failure of the projected invasion of England; and, again, in the last years of the First Empire, he showed himself both at Fontainebleau and at Waterloo. Excerpt from France Since the First Empire It seems necessary to say a few words to explain how this book was written. I am conscious that it is not what it would have been had my husband lived to finish it. He meant it to be a complete history of the different parties which for centuries in France have struggled and fought each one in turn gaining supreme power by trampling the others under foot, and which still represent political life and feeling in France. He loved France with an ardent love. He longed to make his countrymen just to her, to make them understand her history and sympathise with her difficulties. He studied her history and her literature with ceaseless interest. Newspapers, essays, memoirs, histories were carefully read, and from them were volumes of notes taken. Excerpt from History of the Consulate and the Empire of France Under Napoleon, Vol. 7: Forming a Sequel to "the History of the French Revolution" At the same period, important events were passing in Dalma tia, the Russians still retained the mouths of the Cattaro. Napoleon, taking pattern from their conduct on this point, and in particular from the manner in which they had occupied Corfu, and usurped the sovereignty of it, had resolved to seize the little republic of Ragusa, which separated Cattaro from the rest of Dalmatia. He had sent thither his aide-de-camp Lau riston, with a brigade of infantry, for the purpose of establish ing himself there. Lauriston was presently surrounded by the insurgent Montenegrins and by a Russian corps of some thou sand men. Blockaded by the English on the sea side, besieged by ferocious mountaineers and a regular Russian force on the land side, he found himself in real danger, which, however, he faced with courage. Fortunately, general Molitor, an equally faithful companion in arms and firm and skilful officer in presence of the enemy, ew to his relief. That general, not following the example too frequent in the army of the Rhine, of leaving in the lurch a neighbour whom one dislikes, proceeded sponta neously by forced marches to Ragusa, with a corps of men, resolutely attacked the camp of the Russians and the Montenegrins, carried it though strongly entrenched, and thus extricated the French who were in the place. He put to the sword a great number of Montenegrins and deterred them for a long time from their incursions into Dalmatia.
