Freshwater is our planet’s most precious resource, and also the least conserved. Freshwater makes up only 3 percent of the total water on the planet, and yet the majority (1.9 percent) is held in a frozen state in glaciers, icebergs, and polar ice fields. This leaves approximately one-half of 1 percent of the total volume of water on the planet as freshwater available in liquid form. This book traces the complex history of the steady growth of humankind’s water consumption, which today reaches some 9.7 quadrillion gallons per year. Along with a larger population has come the need for more drinking water, larger farms requiring extensive irrigation, and more freshwater to support business and industry. At the same time, such developments have led to increased water pollution. Three detailed case studies are included. The first looks at massive water systems in locations such as New York City and the efforts required to protect and transport such resources. The second shows how growth has affected freshwater quality in the ecologically unique and geographically isolated Lake Baikal region of eastern Russia. The third examines the success story of the privatized freshwater system in Chile and consider how that country’s water sources are threatened by climate change.

The available literature on freshwater fungi is limited. Over the subsequent years a considerable volume of scientific papers have appeared scattered throughout numerous journals. There is therefore no recent synthesis of the subject and this is the objective of the proposed book. Freshwater habitats are rich in fungi with some 3,000 described species, most of papers focussing on their identification, substrata they grow on and world distribution. However, these fungi play an important role in the freshwater ecosystem, and are primarily involved in the breakdown of leaf litter contributing food for detritus feeders. Our book will bring together a wide range of acclaimed mycologists to review recent developments on the biology and ecology of freshwater fungi, particularly their molecular phylogeny, biodiversity, causative diseases of freshwater amphibians, fishes and invertebrate animals, decomposition of leaf litter, stream pollution and their potential role in bioremediation.

This book explores the diversity, interactions and activities of microbes within freshwater environments. These form an important part of the biosphere, which also includes oceans, terrestrial environments and the earth's atmosphere. Freshwater environments are considered to include all those sites where freshwater occurs as the main external medium, either in the liquid or frozen state. Water microorganisms are capable of flourishing in all water habitants, from several kilometers below the seafloor to the first millimeter of a shallow trench created by rainwater and into acidic lakes. Three major domains compose water microorganisms-Eukaryota, Archaea and Bacteria - as well as viruses. Their omnipresence impacts the entire biosphere as they are the main producers of energy and carbon flow to other organisms. Some of the microbes decompose organic matter and thus they recycle nutrients in complex manner involved in various geochemical cycles as the nitrogen, the phosphorus and the carbon cycle. Water microbiology is concerned with the microorganisms that live in water, or can be transported from one habitat to another by water. Water can support the growth of many types of microorganisms. This can be advantageous. For example, the chemical activities of certain strains of yeasts provide us with beer and bread. As well, the growth of some bacteria in contaminated water can help digest the poisons from the water. This book will be useful to researchers, teachers and students of microbiology, botany, zoology and agriculture.
