Excerpt from Friction and Carrying Capacity of Ball and Roller Bearings In order to facilitate the training Of large guns, it is very desir able to reduce the friction at the trunnion bearings. These bear ings are moved infrequently and at very low speeds. They may be, however, subjected to great loads When the gun is fired. These conditions are very different from those usual for bearings in engineering work. For the latter the speed is much greater and the periods of Operation much longer They, however, are not often subject to great loads or to impact. In 1901 the National Bureau of Standards (NBS) was founded to provide standard weights and measures and to be the national physical laboratory for the United States of America. The NBS conducted a lot of research in the fields of science and technology which were reported as "Technological Papers." In 1988 the NBS became what we know now; the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). This is one of those documents written by employees of the NBS.
