The turn of the millennium has stimulated much scholarly reflection on the historical significance of the twentieth century as a whole. Explaining the century’s dual legacy of progress and prosperity on one hand, and of world war, genocide, and mass destruction on the other, has become a key task for academics and policymakers alike. Not surprisingly, Germany holds a prominent position in the discussion. What does it mean for a society to be so closely identified with both inflicting and withstanding enormous suffering, as well as with promoting and enjoying unprecedented affluence? What did Germany’s experiences of misery and abundance, fear and security, destruction and reconstruction, trauma and rehabilitation have to do with one another? How has Germany been imagined and experienced as a country uniquely stamped by pain and prosperity? The contributors to this book engage these questions by reconsidering Germany’s recent past according to the themes of pain and prosperity, focusing on such topics as welfare policy, urban history, childbirth, medicine, racism, political ideology, consumerism, and nostalgia.

What do you do when one day you return home and life as you knew it had changed forever? Well I can answer that, the only thing you can do is trust God to get you through it. Most people would probably not share the things that I'm going to share in this memoir. In fear of being judged or even embarrassed. I choose not to feel neither, I believe that what I experienced, many have experienced and refuse to talk about. I know God allowed me to get through the most difficult time in my life, so that I can speak to his people about it. So that they can be encouraged to go through what life throws at us and come out on the other side, whole, happy and healed. Don't get me wrong, it was challenging being so vulnerable, but I believe God wanted me that way so that I can reach the broken so that they can see his faithfulness. There were times that I did not think I would make it through this devastation, but I continued to trust God throughout the process.

How have millions of American Christians come to measure spiritual progress in terms of their financial status and physical well-being? How has the movement variously called Word of Faith, Health and Wealth, Name It and Claim It, or simply prosperity gospel come to dominate much of our contemporary religious landscape? Kate Bowler's Blessed is the first book to fully explore the origins, unifying themes, and major figures of a burgeoning movement that now claims millions of followers in America. Bowler traces the roots of the prosperity gospel: from the touring mesmerists, metaphysical sages, pentecostal healers, business oracles, and princely prophets of the early 20th century; through mid-century positive thinkers like Norman Vincent Peale and revivalists like Oral Roberts and Kenneth Hagin; to today's hugely successful prosperity preachers. Bowler focuses on such contemporary figures as Creflo Dollar, pastor of Atlanta's 30,000-member World Changers Church International; Joel Osteen, known as "the smiling preacher," with a weekly audience of seven million; T. D. Jakes, named by Time magazine one of America's most influential new religious leaders; Joyce Meyer, evangelist and women's empowerment guru; and many others. At almost any moment, day or night, the American public can tune in to these preachers-on TV, radio, podcasts, and in their megachurches-to hear the message that God desires to bless them with wealth and health. Bowler offers an interpretive framework for scholars and general readers alike to understand the diverse expressions of Christian abundance as a cohesive movement bound by shared understandings and common goals.

"I looked around upon the world, and saw that it was shadowed by sorrow and scorched by the fierce fires of suffering. And I looked for the cause. I looked around, but could not find it; I looked in books, but could not find it; I looked within, and found there both the cause and the self-made nature of that cause. I looked again, and deeper, and found the remedy. I found one Law, the Law of Love; one Life, the Life of adjustment to that Law; one Truth, the truth of a conquered mind and a quiet and obedient heart." James Allen's inquiry within became The Path of Prosperity, first published in 1901 and still valued today as a guiding light for people to find within themselves the source of success, happiness, and accomplishment.

Through a remarkable and fascinating journey, Costi Hinn went from a next-generation prosperity preacher to the first to abandon the family faith and share the true gospel. Sarah Smith is your average twenty something living in London. Like many millennials flocking to London with big aspirations of finding love and big careers, Sarah seemingly managed to make one of her dreams come true. "Most twenty-five-year-olds with a hot live-in boyfriend would find much more intriguing ways to spend their nights than watching Netflix on the sofa till the early hours of the morning. But alas, that was not to be my life. It was either Netflix or lie awake in bed with my boyfriend asleep next to me, wondering what had happened to our relationship. I had chosen Netflix." When her relationship crumbles and her job as a receptionist at a high ranking newspaper is threatened, Sarah finds herself plummeting to rock bottom. On the verge of homelessness, Sarah conceded that there she had no other choice but to make that dreaded phone call, to her mother. "Cameron and I broke up," I mumbled. "I don't have anywhere else to go." I held my breath as I waited for her to respond. My stomach was in knots and I felt like I was my teenage self again, waiting to get a telling off for something I had done wrong. Back in her childhood room, in debt with redundancy looming, Sarah questions the choices she'd made that led her to where she was. But, when a girl had a spirited colleague in her corner and a chance encounter with the hot new CEO of the Mirror, Sarah slowly starts to realise that the best part of rock bottom was that the only way left, was up. She starts to wonder if there wasn't some sort of purpose to it all. She soon realises that maybe she had to lose the dead weight of her old life, so she could sour to the top of her new. Sarah's story reinforces to us all, the age old saying, that when life gives you lemons....you get out a big jug and make some lemonade.
