Excerpt from Catalogue of Fruit Trees Under Test at the Experimental Farm at Agassiz, British Columbia: June 1900 The site for the experimental farm for British Columbia was chosen at Agassiz in 1888 and possession was had on September Agassiz is located about 70 miles east of Vancouver and m a very central position in the valley of the Eraser in the coast climate. The land consists of about 325 acres of valley land fronting on the main line of the Canadian Pacific Railway and adjoining the station at Agassiz, with about 800 acres of broken mountain land in the rear. Prior to purchase about 35 acres of the valley land had been partly cleared and was more or less under cultivation, including 3 acres of young orchard. About 30 acres of the land which had been partly under cultivation was thoroughly worked up in the autumn of 1889 and prepared for planting in the spring of 1900. Additional land has been cleared from year to year and through the energetic action of the superintendent the clearing has been made to keep pace not only with the necessities for orchard planting, but also with the requirements for experimental work with farm crops and the raising of supplies for farm animals. The cleared land in the valley at the present time is about 160 acres of which from 60 to 65 acres are occupied by fruit trees. There are also over fruit trees planted in clearings up the sides of the mountain at elevations ranging from 150 to feet in height. The work of selecting the varieties and securing the trees has devolved mainly on the Director, while the planting and care, and the notes on their growth and productive ness, with the descriptions of the fruits, are entirely the work of the Superintendent. Excerpt from Fruit Ranching in British Columbia The mountain girdle is massive, its continuity unbroken; its features are devoid of softness, of allurement, of winning charm. I do not mean that these Kootenay Mountains and this Kootenay Lake lack attraction. I mean that it is to severe and austere moods of the imagination that they appeal, rather than to soft and tender sensibilities. The poetic effect is produced; but it is an effect that is sym pathetic to the mind of a Crabbe rather than to the mind of a Longfellow, typical of a Browning rather than of a Tennyson. Excerpt from Small Fruit Culture The average farmer's home in Canada is not supplied with an adequate amount of small fruits, notwithstanding the ease with which they can be grown. It is a common thing to see a farmer on market day buying strawberries and other small fruits in the town to be taken home and treated as a luxury, when he should produce in his own garden all that he and his family could consume if they ate fruit three times a day. This state of affairs seems to be accounted for mainly by the fact that the farmer thinks he is too busy a man to have and care for a garden. If the farmers of this country only knew how much better they and their families would be with a plentiful supply of fruit they might make a greater eflort than they do to raise enough for home consumption. There are some Canadian farmers, we are glad to say, who do have good gardens of both fruit and vegetables. The garden, which is usually on a well drained piece of land near the home, dries earlier than the fields, and can, therefore, be attended to before work begins in the field. A few hours' labour puts it in such shape that it can be cared for with comparatively little work during the summer. With the following information to guide him, there is no good reason why every farmer should not have a fruit garden.
