This book introduces graduate students to the gamma-ray and conversion-electron spectroscopic methods, which have shed new light on nuclear structure and reaction mechanisms. The simplicity and familiarity of the electromagnetic interaction involved gives accurate values for many nuclear quantities, and both static and dynamic properties can be investigated over a wide range of excitation energies. More experienced nuclear physicists will benefit by the book's review of recent developments in the field, including the development of new experimental techniques such as gamma-detector assemblies, electron spectrometers, and measurements of electromagnetic moments. The book is distinguished by a careful balance between the presentation of theoretical concepts and experimental methods.

Nuclear Spectroscopy and Reactions, Part A covers information regarding the development of nuclear spectroscopy and its reactions, while emphasizing in-beam spectroscopy. This part specifically covers concerns regarding accelerators, specialized auxiliary equipment, and measurement techniques for charged particles and gamma rays. Organized into three major sections, this book first discusses accelerators in low- and intermediate-energy nuclear physics, and then covers electrostatic accelerators, cyclotron, and specialized accelerators. The second section covers polarized beam and targets, as well as on-line mass separations. The last section discusses the measurement of charged particle and gamma ray spectra including the detection of semiconductor radiation, large Nal, and charged particles. This book is written to primarily benefit graduate students who are engaged in research that concerns nuclear spectroscopy.

The post World War II era witnessed a tremendous growth in the research carried out in neutron-induced reactions and especially in neutron capture y-ray studies. This growth was stimulated by the availability of neutron sources, such as reactors and accelerators, and by the development of high resolution y-ray and conversion electron detectors. Today the combination of high flux reactors and precise instrumentation has produced spectral data of exceptional quality, as the pages of these proceedings illustrate. The world-wide community of the practioners of the art of cap ture y-ray spectroscopy has met three times in the last decade: the first international symposium on this subject was held at Studsvik, Sweden in 1969, and the second at Petten, The Netherlands in 1974. A smaller meeting, of mostly u. S. and some European parti cipation, was held at Argonne National Laboratory in 1966. A perusal of the proceedings of these meetings shows the striking ad vances in this now mature field of physics over the last dozen years. Each meeting has seen a small but perceptible increase in the number of papers presented and the number of laboratories repre sented. More importantly, each meeting has documented the increasing impact of (n,y) reasearch, not only on other areas of basic physics, but also on commercial and medical applications of this technology. A total of 29 invited papers and 97 contributed papers were presented at this symposium.

Applied Gamma-Ray Spectrometry covers real life application of the gamma-ray and the devices used in their experimental studies. This book is organized into 9 chapters, and starts with discussions of the various decay processes, the possible interaction mechanisms of gamma radiation with matter, and the intrinsic and extrinsic variables, which affect the observed gamma-ray and X-ray spectra. The subsequent chapters deal with the properties and fabrication of scintillation detectors, semiconductor detectors, and proportional gas counters. These chapters present some of the most widely utilized applications of these detectors, with a particular emphasis to the activation analysis. These topics are followed by reviews of the description of basic equipment, such as amplifiers, analyzers, special spectrometer arrangements, and detector shielding. Other chapters describe energy and time resolution and quantitative calibration. The quantitative and qualitative interpretation of the spectra is also explained, along with the calibration of the detectors. The last chapter considers the analytical applications of gamma-ray and X-ray spectrometry in tracer studies, activation analysis, fission product studies, and X-ray fluorescence analysis. This book will be of value to analytical chemists and analytical chemistry researchers.
