Civil War histories typically center on the deeds of generals and sweeping depictions of battle. This unique study of one Southern county's war experience tells of ordinary soldiers and their wives, mothers and children, slaves, farmers, merchants, Unionists and deserters--through an examination of tax records. The recently discovered 1863 Gaston County, North Carolina, tax list provides a detailed economic and social picture of a war-weary community, recording what taxpayers owned, cataloging slaves by name, age and monetary value, and assessing luxury items. Contemporary diaries, letters and other previously unpublished documents complete the picture, describing cotton mill operations, the lives of slaves, political disagreements, rationales for soldiers' enlistments and desertions, and economic struggles on the home front.

This volume covering North Carolina’s Civil War–era flags tells the story of the Confederate State through its banners of pride, battle, and rebellion. Throughout the 1860s, the Confederate State of North Carolina flew scores of flags over its government, cavalry, and navy. Symbolizing the way of life those men sought to protect, these flags provide a unique index to the history of the Civil War in this southern coastal state. This comprehensive study of North Carolina’s Civil War–era flags presents a wide-ranging collection of these banners, along with information on their origins and meanings. From the flags of the Guilford Greys to the Buncombe Riflemen, this collection is a fascinating portrait of the state’s ill-fated battle for independence.

"I think that we can hold our position here against any force that the enemy can bring against us, as we have an admirable position & are all ready. I can give you no idea when the general attack will take place. It may be this evening, tomorrow or at any moment as both parties are apparently ready & we have nothing to do but pitch in."-Captain Charles C. North Carolina sent more than 125,000 men and boys to fight the Civil War. It is estimated that about 40,000 lost their lives on the battlefield or by disease. Most were sent home for burial in family plots or community churchyards but thousands could not be identified or could not be transported and were interred in unmarked graves across the country. Many never had an obituary published. Others had obituaries that included directions to the deceased's final resting place. This compilation of obituaries from North Carolina newspapers documents the date and cause of death for hundreds of soldiers, with many providing place of burial, surviving relatives, last words, accounts by comrades and details of military service.
