Gideon Jephthah And Samson

Gideon, Jephthah, and Samson were judges with whom God used to deliver the Israelites from their enemies. Gideon, the mighty man of valour, was used by God to deliver them from the Midianites. Jephthah was a son of a harlot, a mighty man whom God used to deliver the Israelites from the hands of the Ammonites. Samson, that one-man army, was used by God to deliver the Israelites from the oppression of the Philistines.

This is a book about a book: it is an in-depth yet reader friendly analysis of the Book of Judges, one of the most dramatic books of the Bible. Against the commonly-held view that this remarkable work is no more than a collection of hero tales stemming from Israel’s earliest days in its land—its “Heroic Age,” so to speak—this study makes the case that the Book of Judges is a unified composition with a single focused message: that it is the values held by a people and not its politics that determine its fate. Further, Judges contends that there is a direct connection between the kind of values people internalize and the level of violence that racks their society, both inflicted from without and generated from within. And not least, that the presence of violence is a symptom that a society has abandoned the moral values of monotheism for the Machiavellian politics of a pagan worldview that worships power as the ultimate reality. The larger-than-life heroes and heroines—Ehud and Jael, Deborah and Gideon, Jephthah and Samson—who people the pages of Judges serve by their example to illustrate the way this thesis works out in the world.

Many scholars in Bible are interpreting the biblical text from newer interdisciplinary approaches. These disciplines, such as modern literary theory, sociology, and anthropology, have their own technical vocabulary, presuppositions, questions, and methodologies, which a biblical scholar must learn in order to appropriate these approaches for study of the biblical text. This book will introduce the student and the interested teacher to these new approaches, providing bibliography for further study in the method. Moreover, this book will actually apply the method to a particular text in the Book of Judges, so that the reader may see the method "in action."

The book of Judges describes a time in the life of the nation of Israel between the prophetic leadership of Moses and Joshua and the establishment of the monarchy. During that time, “everyone did what was right in his own eyes” (Judges 17:6). The most shocking feature in the book of Judges, however, is not the horror of Israel’s sin, but the glory of salvation from that sin. The darkness of Israel’s sin is overcome only by the wonder of God’s salvation worked through a series of memorable judges, who ultimately point us to Jesus Christ.
