Tracing the origins of mankind through lost and vanished civilizations, including mysterious Atlantis. PREFACE. The present little book is devoted to an at- tempt to simplify the story of the early begin- nings of our world, and to trace the origin of the vanished civilizations, remains of which are now being brought to light every day by distinguished archaeologists. The treatment of such subjects in so small a compass may well deserve the name of " Glimpses," and only merits consideration from the fact that the author confesses to have annexed without qualm or compunction (but she hopes with care) the writings of learned men, and has tried to re-tell their discoveries in plain lan- guage suitable to her youthful readers. It can scarcely be said that there is anything in this book which has not appeared somewhere be- fore, in the vast literature of many lands which has grown up round so many distinguished scientists, some of whose books are so pro- found as to be outside the range of general readers. They have forgotten that youthful students have to walk before they attempt to run. This accomplishment in the paths of early history the author of this little book has endeavoured to teach, through the medium of others' profundity.

In this inviting picture book, Jean-Paul Barbier, world-renowned historian and founder of the Barbier-Mueller Museum, recounts the moving and glorious history of, among others, the people who built Babylon, the Benin Kingdom, the Pyramids of Egypt and the statues of Easter Island. Mankind, at every crossroads in its development, at every latitude and in every continent, has been continually confronted with challenges. Here, Barbier looks at the way these challenges were met, recounting a past in which the grandiose, the mysterious and the human are intertwined. For the first time, a single volume presents all of these "vanished civilizations" in a synthesis which plunges us deep into the worlds of the past. Through beautiful and lavish photographs, this book invites you to discover such mysteries as the world of the Etruscans, the art of the Celts, the Olmec and the dawn of Mexican art, the grandeur and decadence of the Maya, and the mystical North American Indians.

Explores scientific evidence from four cataclysmic events that led to the development of civilization and the downfall of Atlantis • The sequel and companion volume to The Destruction of Atlantis • Studies the connections between the world-conquering war the Atlanteans launched and the quartet of natural catastrophes that ravaged the earth more than 5,000 years ago • Demonstrates that the Atlanteans ran an imperial copper trade empire that stretched from North America to Asia Minor Archaeologists have long puzzled over the evidence suggesting highly sophisticated copper mining activities in the area of the Great Lakes some 5,000 years ago. Menomonie Indian tradition speaks of fair skinned mariners who had come in the past to “dig out the shiny bones” of the Earth Mother. Plato, meanwhile, recorded that Atlanteans provided an exceptionally high grade of copper that was no longer available in his time. In this sequel to The Destruction of Atlantis, Frank Joseph argues that the Menomonie Indians’ mariners were Atlanteans and that the destruction of Atlantis by war and natural catastrophe brought about the end of Bronze Age civilization. Furthermore, Atlantis’s survivors dispersed to all sides of their former island empire into Western Europe, the Near East, and North and South America. In Survivors of Atlantis Frank Joseph provides an in-depth study of the Atlantean war and the intimate connections it had with the last of four great cosmic catastrophes generated by the cyclical return of a comet and its debris. This quartet of natural disasters was followed by mass migrations recorded in the histories of such diverse peoples as the Incas of Peru, the Celtic Irish, the Classical Greeks, and the Aztecs of Mexico. Where the archaeology, mythology, astronomy, and geology of these cultures coincide, a common thread is exposed: Atlantis. Joseph shows that the fate of the Atlantean empire is the story of early civilization and reveals Atlantis to be a credible part of the world’s history.
