Global Trends of Smart Cities provides integrated analysis of 135 cities that participated in the IBM’s Smarter Cities Challenge in 2010–2017. It establishes evidence-based benchmarking of city geographies, city sizes, governance structures, and local planning contexts in smart cities. This book uses a combination of descriptive statistical analysis and real-world case study narratives to evaluate the ways in which each individual urban variable or their combination matter in the diversity of smart city approaches around the globe. It is acknowledged that the Smarter Cities Challenge offers a particular set of smart initiatives and is not representative of all smart cities around the world. Nevertheless, the global presence of the Challenge across five continents and its involvement with 135 cities of all size and socioeconomic status provides a solid foundation to conduct comparative research on smart cities. Considering limited comparative research available in the smart city debate, this book makes significant contribution in understanding the state of smart city development in urban governments worldwide. A rising proportion of the global population are moving to cities in search of a better standard of living. However, although urbanisation has its benefits, unchecked urbanisation can lead to a host of challenges, such as congestion and limited access to public services. As such, the concept of urban liveability has been garnering more attention from policymakers and academics who are interested in mitigating the negative effects of urbanisation.In this context, the Asia Competitiveness Institute (ACI) has released the 2018 Global Liveable and Smart Cities Index (GLSCI), the third in its series of liveability indices. The GLSCI attempts to measure the liveability of an average resident in a city. More importantly, this year's edition has added considerations to the concept of smart cities and the role that these technologies can play in augmenting the liveability of a city's residents. It also builds on ACI's past liveability indices by expanding the number of cities in the index to 78, notably with African cities for the first time. In addition, this book includes two case studies on liveability. The first one concerns the relationship between a city's liveability, smartness, connectivity, and agglomeration, while the other is a case study on the 99-year lease of public housing in Singapore.

Ancient Rome and Athens were once considered by every indication, great cities! European cities have endured a number of long wars that nearly destroyed them permanently. In the U.S., the City of San Francisco was nearly wiped out by the earthquake of 1906 and in 1871 the City of Chicago was nearly destroyed by fire. In nearly every case, these major cities were able to recover, rebuild, transform, making them stronger and more resilient. Today the so-called "smart cities" movement is based in part on the confluence of new technologies, economic growth, a re-evaluation of quality of life factors, as well as the resurgence of interest in cities across the globe. For example, only recently have we witnessed the trend towards urban growth in American cities. Today the outward migration has reversed itself after decades of residents moving to the suburbs or further out to rural parts of the country. Now, people are returning to our cities, or have decided not to leave as their forefathers had before them. This reinforces the need to re-think and to act differently when it comes to urban planning and maintaining sustainable cities. Even the smartest of cities can not rest on their past success. Smart cities require a constant process of vision, execution, and renewal, which makes it more a journey than a destination. There are many elements that comprise a smart or intelligent city. This book was created to further explore those elements and the pathways towards becoming and maintaining a smart city.
