Globalisation and the governance of the international financial system have arrived at the crossroads, where either a coherent level playing field for the cross-border activities of banks and multinational enterprises is settled upon, or the risk of another crisis will build up again. This book will explore the underlying problems alongside inconsistent economic and financial trends as a guide for researchers, advanced students and professionals to think about the interconnectedness of the factors involved. Readers will gain insights drawn from recent developments in economic theory and empirical research—a toolkit to help them in their future careers in economics and finance—illustrated with an analysis of the 2008 crisis and its aftermath.

A timely examination of capitalism's influence on the world and the consequences of its expansion. An important big picture book, containing expert analysis, about recent business events and what that holds for the future. Current financial crisis has forced a complete reassessment of capitalism's role in global business - this book is essential reading for that. Controversial yet authoritative - author provides a platform for saving humanity from the uncontrolled excesses of capitalism. Major review and feature coverage expected in national and business media. Over the past 20 years, the world has undergone nothing less than a global business revolution, driven by the force of capitalism. Yet capitalism is a two-edged sword. It has propelled forward human ingenuity and creativity to a new peak. However, it threatens fundamentally the very existence of the human species. This major book provides an overview of capitalism's global rise and its consequences. The global ecology is profoundly threatened by the uncontrolled energy and material consumption that is at the heart of capitalism. Large global corporations have burst on the scene in pursuit of profits, and have become more important than nation governments. And the revolution in financial markets has produced a system that is essentially 'flying blind' today. Humanity is at a crossroads and disaster is looming. Mechanisms are required to contain the self-created monster of unconstrained global capitalism. About the author - Peter Nolan(recently awarded CBE) is an eminent professor at Jesus College, Cambridge University. He also holds the Sinyi Chair in the Judge Business School and is visiting professor at Copenhagen Business School. He is the author of China and the Global Economy (Palgrave) and advisor to government ministers and CEOs.

Globalization proceeds apace, taking on new forms that impact global economic, financial and social processes. Interdependence is not simply strengthening the range of possibilities for national economies to participate in, and advantage of, these developments, but expanding the opportunities that are available to them. The question is how do states take advantage of these global developments. Russia is no exception. Although it actively participates in the globalization process, it is, however, confronting greater economic, technological, structural and institutional problems than other countries. At the same time, there is dwindling hope for favourable conditions to continue in global energy markets, which are crucial to the Russian economy. These problems exist alongside the risk that the widening gap between Russia and other economies in terms of economic performance and technological development and growth will continue. Russia now stands at the crossroads of either overcoming or exacerbating these current challenges. This choice dictates the current realities of pax economica. Moscow must, in the very near future, make meaningful, if not fundamental, decisions aimed at further opening its economy, improving its institutions, and strengthening its international ties. This task is made more difficult by Russia's weakening competitiveness and by its ambiguous position on the international division of labour. The old model of Russian development has been exhausted and a new one must be chosen. Russia's choice at this juncture will determine the future of its economic development for many years to come.

Two powerful forces measure their strength by acting upon globalization. One of them pushes globalization forward, while the other hinders its advance and promotes its decline. In which of those directions should Latin America move? Uncertainty hinders the region's strategic vision. If the future entails re-launching of globalization, it seems obvious that Latin America should follow along its lines. However, if globalization were to embark on a declining phase and an endangered future, the region would need to look at other options. Latin America, therefore, faces not only a dramatic uncertainty as a result of forces beyond its control, but also needs to anticipate unforeseen events to the best of its abilities, and react to or act upon them. Strategic reflection becomes imperative to manage both uncertainty and the possibility of rapid change. This exercise in strategic reflection implies an immersion in fraught international surroundings, analyzing the forces that push for and against globalization, trying to measure their respective strength, convergence capacity, and potential impact. At the same time, it requires looking into the flaws, weaknesses and contradictions of such forces. With these elements in hand, it will be easier to envisage where the trends are leading to, and by extension, where Latin America may end up standing and which goals it should follow.
