There is such a big deal about going green! How exactly can it help save the environment if we start using alternative fuel? The fact is that by using alternative fuel we can greatly reduce the impact of harmful exhaust emissions to the atmosphere. In so doing, we lessen the effects of climate change and its threat of havoc upon our planet. That is perhaps the number one benefit of using alternative fuel instead of the more commonly used petroleum fuel. Alternative fuels are manufactured domestically. Some widely-used forms are biodiesel, natural gas, ethanol, propane, hydrogen, coal, and also renewable sources such as solar and wind energy. The United States alone is responsible for 27% of harmful exhaust emissions such as carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, sulfur and more, all of which cause damage to the earth by means of its heat-trapping effect. Alternative fuels burn cleaner by more than 90% as compared to regular petroleum thereby lessening this heat-trapping outcome. Still, a good point to keep in mind: it is not so much what we use but how we use it. Are we taking for granted that fuel or energy will never run out and are being wasteful? When we lessen the amount of any form of fuel we use, we can prevent the burning of that remaining 10%. Now, that's absolutely going green! You can do your share of protecting the environment by learning to use alternative fuel sources in your everyday life with the help of this book.

Global warming and pollution go hand in hand but the major concern of most scientists and environmentalists now is global warming or the constant rise of the earth’s temperature. For the past decades, science has recorded that the constant rise in temperature has been caused by human activity. With all the pollutants that are produced by humans, these three gases namely, carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide and methane. Studies have already shown how these gasses can trap heat but there are still some uncertainties on how the earth reacts to it. What they do know is that the earth needs to stay temperate enough to support life but that humans are speeding up the process.

In face of the increasingly obvious need to ensure the sustainability of the environment, alternative and renewable energy sources are no longer just the concern of environmentalists and have become commitments of governments virtually everywhere in the world. In this context, ethanol emerges as an excellent substitute for petroleum derivatives. This green alternative fuel is sustained by its own burning because when CO2 serves as a carbon source for the growth of plants, it will allow the carbohydrates to be fermented. In addition, currently different generations of this fuel are being proposed, considering the utilization of their own waste. However, challenges still need to be overcome to enable the second, third and fourth generations of ethanol. At the same time, other renewable fuel alternatives emerge to compete with it. The automobile industry, for example, has been developing new engines, hybrids or not, that can be powered by electricity or H2. In this regard, this book addresses, under different aspects, the main strategies to surpass the remaining obstacles, as well as the advantages and disadvantages of ethanol as a fuel of the future. In this context, the "Ethanol as a Green Alternative Fuel" book shows present and future scenarios about bioethanol and perspective in their chain, considering the economic and environmental impact mitigations approach.

All Hell Breaking Loose is an eye-opening examination of climate change from the perspective of the U.S. military. The Pentagon, unsentimental and politically conservative, might not seem likely to be worried about climate change—still linked, for many people, with polar bears and coral reefs. Yet of all the major institutions in American society, none take climate change as seriously as the U.S. military. Both as participants in climate-triggered conflicts abroad, and as first responders to hurricanes and other disasters on American soil, the armed services are already confronting the impacts of global warming. The military now regards climate change as one of the top threats to American national security—and is busy developing strategies to cope with it. Drawing on previously obscure reports and government documents, renowned security expert Michael Klare shows that the U.S. military sees the climate threat as imperiling the country on several fronts at once. Droughts and food shortages are stoking conflicts in ethnically divided nations, with “climate refugees” producing worldwide havoc. Pandemics and other humanitarian disasters will increasingly require extensive military involvement. The melting Arctic is creating new seaways to defend. And rising seas threaten American cities and military bases themselves. While others still debate the causes of global warming, the Pentagon is intensely focused on its effects. Its response makes it clear that where it counts, the immense impact of climate change is not in doubt.
