A challenge to the doctrine of biblical inerrancy that calls into question how Christians are taught more about the way of Whiteness than the way of Jesus Angela Parker wasn’t just trained to be a biblical scholar; she was trained to be a White male biblical scholar. She is neither White nor male. Dr. Parker’s experience of being taught to forsake her embodied identity in order to contort herself into the stifling construct of Whiteness is common among American Christians, regardless of their race, ethnicity, gender, or sexual orientation. This book calls the power structure behind this experience what it is: White supremacist authoritarianism. Drawing from her perspective as a Womanist New Testament scholar, Dr. Parker describes how she learned to deconstruct one of White Christianity’s most pernicious lies: the conflation of biblical authority with the doctrines of inerrancy and infallibility. As Dr. Parker shows, these doctrines are less about the text of the Bible itself and more about the arbiters of its interpretation—historically, White males in positions of power who have used Scripture to justify control over marginalized groups. This oppressive use of the Bible has been suffocating. To learn to breathe again, Dr. Parker says, we must “let God breathe in us.” We must read the Bible as authoritative, but not authoritarian. We must become conscious of the particularity of our identities, as we also become conscious of the particular identities of the biblical authors from whom we draw inspiration. And we must trust and remember that as long as God still breathes, we can too.

The Bible is the most familiar book on the planet. But how did the Bible become the Bible? What is the basis of its composition? What’s this I hear about “inspired”? Who is its author? Why are there two Testaments? What is a Testament? Is it true that it was originally written in two or three languages? How did we get the English version of the Bible? So many questions about one book! In All Scripture has a Journey, author Keith Megilligan presents the results of his lifelong query of how the Bible came to be. He addresses a host of question about its composition, history, “heroes” who helped along the way and the price that was paid to bring it to us. This handbook summarizes the English Bible’s journey from origin to publication. Whether the Bible is a dog-eared and well-worn leather bound book or the latest e-pub edition on your devices, that Bible has a journey. God, the Holy Spirit, superintended its origin and preservation.

This book was inspired by real-life events experienced by one young widow from Southern Africa, who at the age of thirty lost her husband. She felt as though she had been abandoned by the wayside holding three young children. She had no tangible support from the family she was married into. As she traversed through this lonesome, slippery journey, she encountered a myriad of storms that forced her to totally surrender everything, including herself and her children, to the Lord. Through this simple act of giving up and submitting all her circumstances to the Lord, she was granted wisdomwisdom with which to handle the grim challenges and storms that confronted her. From the very onset she soon learnt that the relentless hate and hurtful situations that she faced were to be responded to with heartfelt forgiveness, love, and humility. The Lord also provided this widow with a measure of faith much bigger than the size of a mustard seed. She did not just see mountains being moved; storms were conquered and oceans were opened for her and her children to go through. She and her sons were raised from the bottom of the lowest dump heap and raised to levels that she could have hardly even ever dreamt or imagined possible. An African Widows Journey drives home the message, Weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning (Ps. 30:5).
