The essays by journalist Frank Miele in this collection span from 2003 to 2018. "What Matters Most" is Volume 6 of the Heartland Diary USA series. Most of these essays originally appeared in the Daily Inter Lake in Kalispell, Montana, where Miele worked for 34 years, including 18 years as managing editor. The history of the smaller European countries is rather neglected in the teaching of European history at university level.
