It is easy to think of Christian ministry as an exercise of our gifts or even finding fulfillment for ourselves. In God's Prophet, God's Servant, John Goldingay examines the portrait of a prophet's ministry found in Jeremiah and the portrait of a servant's ministry in Isaiah 40-55, showing us that in both cases, God calls us to a deeper and more demanding view of ministry.

God called Samuel to be his prophet during a time of crisis in Israel's history, a time when His chosen people had turned away from Him and were defiantly going their own way. Using the obvious parallels in today's world, noted scholar and teacher Henry Blackaby shows readers how God works in and through those he choses. God spoke to Samuel again and again, shaping him through trials and tragedies Dr. Blackaby calls "defining moments." By studying Samuel's life, readers learn to recognize their own defining moments, and see how moments often defined in crises are simply the voice of God, calling us to His purpose.

As I have grown in the Lord, I have discovered that there are many prophets. Some anointed and well-trained, some... not so much. Some with integrity and Godly character, others... not so much! It grieves me to know that many who call themselves prophets are nothing more than what the Bible calls false teachers and false prophets. They are the wolves in sheep's clothing. They exploit and devour God's people for selfish gain. They speak lies and aid in promoting perpetual sin for filthy lucre. For this reason, it is vitally important to know how to discern a righteous prophet from an unrighteous one. I have made every effort to aid God's people to recognize the character and nature of a true and Godly prophet versus ungodly ones. It is a serious issue impacting the body of Christ and the world as a whole, yet I wondered why there weren't more teachings on false prophets at the countless conferences I had attended. So, one day, I just asked: "Lord, how do I know a false prophet from a true prophet?" The answer He provided me is what's in this book: revealed to me by the Holy Spirit who leads us into all truth. It is He who tells us what the Father is saying and reveals to us things to come. He revealed to me in the Word what false teachers and false prophets look like so I could spiritually discern them. That is the purpose for this book: that YOU may be equipped to discern the true from the false. The word says the tree is known by the fruit it bears. Whether you are looking to enjoy or produce the fruit of the prophetic yourself, you must examine it carefully. Is the fruit-bearing tree connected to the True Vine? Is it life-giving? If you're unsure, then you've picked up the right book! Continue reading on as we explore and strengthen God's servant: the prophet.

The book of Nehemiah is about starting over again. Nehemiah, one of Israel's great leaders, tells firsthand the powerful story of rebuilding ancient Jerusalem's walls after the exile. In the face of great odds, this rebuilding represented the people's renewal of faith, their overcoming of national shame, and the reformation of their conduct. In this volume, Raymond Brown vividly sketches Nehemiah's historical and social setting and demonstrates the book's striking relevance for today. He explores the dominant themes of Nehemiah's doctrine of God, passion for Scripture, experience of prayer, and example of leadership. In describing Nehemiah the man, Brown concludes, "He must surely be regarded as one of the most inventive and resilient personalities in the rich tapestry of Old Testament biography." Part of the beloved Bible Speaks Today series, The Message of Nehemiah offers an insightful, readable exposition of the biblical text and thought-provoking discussion of how its meaning relates to contemporary life. Used by students and teachers around the world, The Bible Speaks Today commentaries are ideal for those studying or preaching the Bible and anyone who wants to delve deeper into the text. This revised edition of a classic volume features lightly updated language and Scripture quotations with a new interior design.
