Hidden in the vast northern reaches of North America, Canadian bartenders have been shaking, stirring, building, and throwing some of the finest drinks the world has ever savoured. Yes, there's more to Canada's mixed drink repertoire that its national beverage, the Bloody Caesar! Victoria barman and author Shawn Soole proudly presents the people and drinks that introduce readers to this widening scope of concepts and concoctions in Great Northern Cocktails. "Canada has always been that big, snow-covered country to the north of the United States where people live in igloos and ride moose to school," Soole remarks. "Obviously, this is an exaggeration on Canadian stereotypes but our culture, climate, and people are some of the most diverse in the world. Canada is rich in world cultures and in the last ten to fifteen years has slowly and apologetically become a cocktail culture powerhouse." With over 140+ drink recipes plus syrup, tincture, and infusion formulae, Soole introduces veteran and new Canadian drink talents who preside in the nation's bars from Vancouver Island to Nova Scotia and their recipes, along with bartending tips, a range of easy-to-follow homemade ingredients, and a glossary so even novice mixers can follow along.

The Great Northern War was a long series of campaigns in which Russia, linked with several other countries in temporary alliances, confronted and eventually replaced Sweden as the predominant power in Northern Europe. While contemporary with the Duke of Marlborough's pivotal campaigns against France, the Great Northern War was in fact more decisive, since it reshaped the Northern European power balance up to the eve of the Napoleonic Wars. It began with a series of astonishing Swedish victories lead by King Charles XII, from Denmark to Poland and deep into Germany. But Peter the Great of Russia showed steadfast determination, and Charles overreached himself when he invaded Russia in 1708; the Russians adopted classic 'scorched earth' tactics until they could destroy the Swedish army at Poltava in 1709, one of the most overwhelming victories in history. Nevertheless, Sweden continued to fight, and frequently win, in Germany, Denmark and Norway, until Charles's death in battle in 1718, though the war itself did not conclude until 1721. This study explores, in detail, the numerous armies and complex alliances engaged in the war for Northern European dominance. Containing accurate full-colour artwork and unrivalled detail, Armies of the Great Northern War offers a vivid insight into the troops which battled for control of the North.

The Great Northern Iron trust leased its lands on the Mesabi iron formation to various mining companies that shipped 721 million tons of natural iron ore and taconite to eastern steel mills from 1907 to 2017 - nearly 15% of the Mesabi's entire historical output. The royalties received were disbursed to the trust's investors - nearly $400 for each of the 1,500,000 shares in the trust - totaling $561 million over its long life. The investors received their trust shares in 1906 as free gifts because they were stockholders of James J. Hill's Great Northern Railway (the predecessor of today's BNSF Railway). These securities were the first from a Minnesota business to be traded on the New York Stock Exchange. The distinctive history of Great Northern Iron is presented for the first time in this book. It is based on the Trust's extensive original archival records and in-depth interviews with its last trustees, managers, and other participants. With nearly 90,000 words and more than 160 historic photos, images, tables, reports, maps, and other materials, many of which have never been made public before, this book also features four specially commissioned large, fold-out color aerial maps and cross-sections that depict in exceptional detail the entire mining landscape of the 100-mile Mesabi Iron Range.Great Northern Iron is a compelling story about daring and entrepreneurship on the Mesabi Range and northeastern Minnesota. It is also an essential reference book about the nation's most important iron mining region. There may be no better source for learning about one of the vital natural resources that provided the foundation for contemporary American life.
