New research opportunities to advance hydrologic sciences promise a better understanding of the role of water in the Earth system that could help improve human welfare and the health of the environment. Reaching this understanding will require both exploratory research to better understand how the natural environment functions, and problem-driven research, to meet needs such as flood protection, supply of drinking water, irrigation, and water pollution. Collaboration among hydrologists, engineers, and scientists in other disciplines will be central to meeting the interdisciplinary research challenges outline in this report. New technological capabilities in remote sensing, chemical analysis, computation, and hydrologic modeling will help scientists leverage new research opportunities.

This book investigates the current and future state of freshwater and the global drive to achieve the UN sustainability goal. It first explores the major barriers to achieving the goal and then examines some of the programs water managers are adopting to overcome those barriers. These programs include finding new ways to supplement existing water supplies, and greater acceptance of alternative supplies, such as recycled waste water and desalination; green infrastructures, and rain and storm water harvesting. It concludes with two chapters on water management tools, including asset management and strategic planning, which are of particular interest to small water and wastewater utilities.

This Clean Water Action Plan, issued by the EPA & the Ag. Dept., provides a blueprint for restoring & protecting the nation's precious water resources. A key element in the Plan is a new cooperative approach to watershed protection in which state, tribal, Fed., & local governments, & the public first identify the watersheds with the most critical water quality problems & then work together to focus resources & implement effective strategies to solve those problems. Includes new initiatives to reduce public health threats, improve the stewardship of natural resources, strengthen polluted runoff controls, & make water quality information more accessible.
