Lakes are one of the most challenging opportunities available to today's fly fisher. Stillwaters offer a long active season with numerous hatches and presentation challenges. Fish grow big and fat and many fishers find this appeal hard to resist. But the transfer from rivers and streams is often difficult, especially if a prolonged trial-and-error approach is adopted. This book examines the stillwater fly fisher's kit bag, expectations, and offers an introduction to the diverse stillwater food sources. The Orvis Guide to Stillwater Trout Fishing explains everything the aspiring stillwater fly fisher needs to be successful and build a sound foundation that will last through a lifetime plying stillwaters.

The Penobscot, Penns Creek, the Little River, Guadalupe, Firehole, Copper River--these streams and ninety-four others like them provide the best trout fishing in America say members of Trout Unlimited (TU). With a dozen or more streams in each of eight regions, one of America’s one hundred best trout streams flows within a few hours’ drive of most of the nation’s anglers. These are the rivers that anglers dream of visiting. Describing species, hatches, the flies and lures, and when to fish, each profile contains information and maps that boosts angler success. Profiles present, as well, the environmental challenges facing each stream and the role that TU and others play in protecting the fishery. Extensive interviews with anglers for whom each stream is “home water,” add depth to personal observations formed when award-winning writer and angler, John Ross, fished many of these streams himself. Many who buy the book set out to fish all the streams. For others, the guide is an essential ingredient in the planning of fishing and family vacations. It’s a book that’s as at home next to a fly tyer’s bench as it is tucked in the console between the seats of a pickup truck. A portion of the sale of each book goes to Trout Unlimited to help protect and sustain coldwater fisheries.

This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1903 edition. Excerpt: ...in one and all of its channels are splendid fish. Countless unnamed small streams and rivulets contribute their currents to feed these lakes, and speckled trout abound wherever the water is deep enough to cover them. Lac du Talon is crossed by the Canadian Pacific Railway at Rutherglen Station, and an easy way of doing the Mattawa is to have the canoe taken by railway to Lac du Talon. The Upper Ottawa.--If the Ottawa River, which is a succession of long reaches and lakes with intervening rapids, is followed north of Mattawa, it will be found to traverse a wild region very similar in general appearance, and with game as plentiful as mentioned in reference to the Mattawa. Each of the unnamed and practically unknown streams and lakes will be found to contain plenty of trout, ranging in size from fingerlings up to great fish, according to the volume of the water they inhabit. There is particularly good fishing in Antoine Creek, about eight miles from Mattawa. The first stage of the journey may be made by small boat or rail from Mattawa up the Ottawa. The Lake Temiscamingue branch of the Canadian Pacific Railway follows the left bank of the river from Mattawa to Temiscamingue at the foot of Lake Temiscamingue, where it branches off to Kippewa on Lake Kippewa. By this route one reaches a country of moose, caribou and bear, and every feeder of the Ottawa contains brook trout. The Jocko River, which joins the Ottawa at Lunsden, is a good trout stream, and excellent sport can be obtained at Beauchene Lake and its outflow. Lake Temiscamingue (Indian for "deep water'), an expansion of the Ottawa some seventy-five miles long, containing big black bass, can be traversed either by canoe or steamers, two fine lines having been established, which run in...

This thoroughly revised and expanded new edition of Taylor Streit’s classic Instinctive Fly Fishing addresses the “real reasons people catch trout,” and offers suggestions and tips to help the aspiring angler take advantage of his or her own fly-fishing instincts. Since Instinctive was first published in 2003, the author has kept track of certain essential elements that were missing from the first edition. Even as he’s been out on a guide trip with a client, he’s kept notes about what “should have been in Instinctive.” This thorough revision benefits from more than seven years of his instinctive rumination. Rewritten with an eye toward a new audience, Instinctive aims for those who fish in competitive situations and overfished waters, which appeals especially to those in the eastern half of the United States. Additional content includes fishing tailwaters with tiny flies, practical information on insect hatches (tricos, blue winged olives, and green drakes) and illustrations of knots and rigs. Also included are additional chapters on the environment, stream manners, and safety.
