Heteroarenes are among the most prevalent structural units in natural products, pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, and other compounds of scientific or commercial interest. In the last decade, a broad range of novel synthetic methods has been developed to not only facilitate construction of the heteroarene motif, but to enable its modification through direct C–H functionalization. This Handbook describes 117 key reagents for selective heteroarene functionalization reactions, including both traditional and transition metal-catalyzed C–H functionalization. Since these reactions typically involve one heteroarene, a coupling partner and a catalyst, the handbook not only focuses on the catalyst itself but also contains other key reaction species. All the information compiled in this volume is also available in electronic format on Wiley Online Library. The 117 reagents represented here are but a small fraction of the ca. 5,000 reagents available in the electronic Encyclopedia of Reagents for Organic Synthesis (e-EROS). e-EROS offers various search interfaces to locate reagents of interest, including chemical structure, substructure and reactions search modes. e-EROS is updated regularly with new and updated entries.

EROS has become a brand name for high quality information on organic reagents. For chemists at the bench we have developed the series of Handbooks of Reagents for Organic Synthesis, which contain all the necessary information in focused volumes. All content has been expertly collected and presented by an internationally recognised and respected editorial board. This four-volume set comprises of: Fluorine-Containing Reagents Today every synthetic chemist working in medicinal and pharmaceutical areas are expected to synthesize compounds containing Fluorides. This book will be an important source of information for the selection and handling of the right reagents. Catalyst Components for Coupling Reactions Compiles all major catalyst components in use in the area, and is intended to guide the experimentalist and facilitate choice among the numerous reagents available for any one purpose. The Handbook details pre-catalysts, catalysts, and ligands prominently employed in coupling reactions, broadly defined. Reagents for Radical and Radical Ion Chemistry Concentrates on reagents for the creation and use of radicals and radical ions, reflecting the enormous growth of radical chemistry over the past ten years. Includes coverage of reagents used in the preparation of key radical and radical ion precursors, reagents for the generation of radical and radical ions themselves, initiators, and radical traps. Sulfur-Containing Reagents Sulfur containing molecules are essential in a wide range of applications, such as drugs, pesticides and polymers and “Sulfur bridges” are important in peptide and protein chemistry. This handbook provides a compilation of all relevant Sulfur containing reagents and how to select and handle the right reagents. This set is intended for chemists in industry and academia, especially in the areas of medicinal chemistry, drug development, pharmaceutical chemistry, biological chemistry, biochemistry, bioorganic chemistry, agricultural and food industries, plastics, polymers, dyes, cosmetics, detergents and novel materials. They are ideal for use in the laboratory.

The Handbook is a compilation of 99 articles on diverse reagents and catalysts that describe the synthesis of heteroarenes, the building blocks of a wide range of chemicals used in pharma and chemical industries. Articles are selected from the e-EROS database and edited to make sure that it includes only the material relevant to the topic of the book and focus on the synthetic aspects. This makes the articles very focused on the needs of readers wanting information on specific syntheses of specific heteroarenes. In addition, the chemistry of each parent heteroarene is also included to ensure that the reader rapidly finds important information. The Handbook is a part of the Handbook of Reagents for Organic Chemistry series, aiming at collecting articles on a particular theme that individual researchers in academia or industry can use on a daily basis.

This major reference work is arranged like an encyclopedia, with each entry providing information about a reagent which has been reported as useful in organic synthesis. Most of the reagents are themselves organic, but inorganic reagents are also included. Suppliers are listed for commercially available reagents; otherwise, a brief indication of the method of preparation is given, along with a literature reference. Concise information and literature references are also provided on the application of reagents. There are author and subject indexes, and a very useful index of reagents by type, so that this reference set can serve as a very convenient point of entry into the literature dealing with a general type of reaction, whether it be a "name" reaction (e.g., Baeyer-Villiger oxidation), a method of introducing a specific functional group (e.g., amination), etc.

From reviews of previous volumes: "Essential for chemistry collections at the university and research levels." --New York Public Library "Highly recommended...lots of succinct, practical information on recent developments...in a format that is easy to use. The reagents are taken up in alphabetical order (common usage names, not CAS indexing code names), sometimes several to a page, sometimes several pages to a reagent. One can expect to find how to make the reagent (in loose terms), or where it can be bought, what it is good for, and where to seek complete details. As with previous volumes, one can profit from just browsing, even if one does not feel a need to look up any particular subject. It is thus a secondary function of the book to help one keep abreast of the field, and it would be a rare chemist who would not learn something new and useful from a casual perusal of the pages." --Journal of the American Chemical Society REAGENTS FOR ORGANIC SYNTHESIS Volume 1 1967 (0-471-25875-X) 1,475 pp. Volume 2 1969 (0-471-25876-8) 538 pp. Volume 3 1972 (0-471-25879-2) 401 pp. Volume 4 1974 (0-471-25881-4) 660 pp. Volume 5 1975 (0-471-25882-2) 864 pp. Volume 6 1977 (0-471-25873-3) 765 pp. Volume 7 1979 (0-471-02918-1) 487 pp. Volume 8 1980 (0-471-04834-8) 602 pp. Volume 9 1981 (0-471-05631-6) 596 pp. Volume 10 1982 (0-471-86636-9) 528 pp. Volume 11 1984 (0-471-88628-9) 669 pp. Volume 12 1986 (0-471-83469-6) 643 pp. Volume 13 1988 (0-471-63007-1) 472 pp. Volume 14 1989 (0-471-50400-9) 386 pp. Volume 15 1990 (0-471-52113-2) 432 pp. Volume 16 1992 (0-471-52721-1) 435 pp. Volume 17 1994 (0-471-00074-4) 464 pp. Volume 18 1999 (0-471-24477-5) 518 pp. Volume 19 1999 (0-471-32709-3) 504 pp. Volume 20 2000 (0-471-36999-3) 552 pp. Volume 21 2002 (0-471-21393-4) 608 pp. Volume 22 2006 (0-471-68243-8) 504 pp.
