This practical book is based on the influential Thinking Together approach - a special method for developing speaking, listening and thinking skills. It is based on classroom research carried out in schools by the Open University, which has now been integrated into the National Primary Strategy. Included are twelve lesson plans for whole class and small group work. These have been built around specific learning objectives for speaking and listening, with activities related to literacy, numeracy, science and citizenship. At the heart of the lesson plans is the ‘talk box’ - a collection of interesting objects which provide a focus for class discussion. The 'talk box' helps children learn to share information, articulate ideas, reason and solve problems together. In this way, teachers can promote the development of children's language and thinking skills throughout the whole of the Key Stage 1 curriculum.

The fourteenth Peter Diamond case has the eminent detective in pursuit of a murderer after a theft at an auction house goes wrong. Just as the bidding gets exciting in a Bath auction house, three armed men stage a hold-up and attempt to steal Lot 129, a medieval carving of the Wife of Bath. The highest bidder, appalled to have the prize snatched away, tries to stop them and is shot dead. Peter Diamond, head of the murder squad, soon finds himself sharing an office with the stone wife - until he is ejected. To his extreme annoyance the lump of stone appears to exert a malign influence over him and his investigation. Refusing to be beaten, he rallies his team and begins finding suspects and motives. The case demands that someone goes undercover. The dangerous mission falls to Sergeant Ingeborg Smith, reverting to her journalist persona to get the confidence of a wealthy local criminal through his pop star girlfriend. And soon, murder makes a reappearance . . .

Welcome to My Life: The Sitcom, featuring the panderings and ponderings of Yours Truly, Chadd Wheat. Believe it or not, many of you have actually asked for this book. I don't know if you intend on using it for the bottom of the birdcage, evidence in impending legal actions, or simply as a guide to living frivolously. Whatever the case, I hope you enjoy it. I started writing My Life: The Sitcom in 2002. Most of my articles, as published in The Lebanon Reporter and elsewhere, are my direct observations on the craziness that surrounds my life. Nearly all the events contained herein are actually true, with the names sometimes changed to protect the ignorant. People often ask me where I get the inspiration to write my ludicrous columns. After rubbing my chin and looking sage, I usually say something like, "by consuming too much reality television, caffeine and other borderline hallucinogens. Ha, ha! Just kidding, local law enforcement! As a matter of fact, I never watch reality television!
