This book focuses on biodegradable polymers that are already in clinical use or under clinical development. Synthetic and natural polymers will be included. This excludes polymers that have been investigated and did not reach clinical development. The purpose of this book is to provide updated status of the polymers that are clinical use and those that are now being developed for clinical use and hopefully will reach the clinic during the next 5 years. The book provides information that of interest to academics and practicing researchers including chemists, biologists and bioengineers and users: physicians, pharmacists.

A characteristic property of most, or perhaps all, proteins is their ability to combine specifically and reversibly with various substances. Well known examples are enzymes that bind substrates and inhibitors, and antibodies that bind antigens. This book deals with lectins, a class of proteins that bind carbohydrates. Another characteristic property of lectins is that they agglutinate cells or precipitate polysaccharides and glycoproteins. This is because lectins are polyvalent, i.e. each lectin molecule has at least two carbohydrate binding sites to allow crosslinking between cells (by combining with sugars on their surfaces) or between sugar containing macromolecules. The agglutinating and precipitating activities of lectins are very similar to those of antibodies. They can likewise be specifically inhibited by low molecular weight compounds (haptens), which in the case of lectins are sugars or sugar containing compounds (Fig. 1.1). Not surprisingly, therefore, many of the methods used in lectin research are based on immunochemical techniques. Nevertheless, lectins are different from antibodies in several important aspects. Many lectins are found in plants, microorganisms and viruses, which do not synthesize immunoglobulins. In fact, they are found in almost all living organisms (Table 1.1) and are not confined to specific organs or tissues. Another marked difference between the two classes of compound is that antibodies are structurally similar, whereas lectins are structurally diverse. In general, lectins are oligomeric proteins composed of subunits, usually with one sugar binding site per subunit.

This book on medicinal plant biotechnology covers recent developments in this field. It includes a comprehensive up-to-date survey on established medicinal plants and on molecules which gained importance in recent years. No recently published book has covered these carefully selected topics. The contributing scientists have been selected on the basis of their involvement in the related plant material as evident by their internationally recognised published work.

People who have survived ritual abuse or mind control experiments have often been silenced, accused of lying, mocked and disbelieved. Clinicians working with survivors often find themselves isolated, facing the same levels of disbelief and denial from other professionals within the mental health field. This report - based on proceedings from a conference on the subject - presents knowledge and experience from both clinicians and survivors to promote understanding and recovery from organized and ritual abuse, mind control and programming. The book combines clinical presentations, survivors' voices, and research material to help address the ways in which we can work clinically with mind control and cult programming from the perspective of relational psychotherapy.

Reports of the beneficial health effects of some peptides have begun to make their way into the scientific literature. Peptides can act as immunomodulators, and have been shown to have a positive influence on calcium absorption, and on regulation of serum cholesterol. A number of peptides may also possess antimicrobial properties that enhance the body's defense mechanisms, and others may produce inhibitory effects for angiotensin-I-converting enzyme (ACE), leading to novel treatments for blood pressure conditions, heart failure, and diabetes. Modern food biotechnology may also allow for the production of highly important products for those suffering life-altering food allergies. A compendium of cutting-edge information for research scientists and clinicians Nutraceutical Proteins and Peptides in Health and Disease is the first book that provides comprehensive discussions on bioactive proteins and peptides in the area of nutraceutical and functional foods. It looks at protein and peptide impact on the body's absorption, defense, regulating, and nervous systems, then delves into hypo-allergenic foods and modern approaches to nutraceutical research and production. With 32 chapters written by 63 scientists working at the frontier of this revolutionizing field, it includes state-of-the-art information on-- The cholesterol-lowering capabilities of proteins and peptides Opioid-like peptides The antibodies found in milk and egg yolks Enzymes derived from traditional Asian fermented foods found useful in novel thrombolytic therapy ACE-inhibitory peptides Enzymatic treatments used to create anti-allergenic food Recent developments in proteomics that are making certain processes economically feasible, including those employed in the binding of bioactive peptides Nutraceutical Proteins and Peptides in Health and Disease provides a compendium of cutting-edge information that can be put to direct use in research, therapy, and production. Biochemists, nutritional scientists, food scientists, and health professionals, as well as graduate students in these fields, will find this book highly useful.
