Health Inequalities In Karnataka A Comparative Study Of Selected Districts

How will the world's largest population approach its inequality challenges? This volume addresses this question by unraveling different strands of India's emerging health and gender geographies. It is the first book to offer a comparative study of these disparities in India, stressing the deep interaction between health challenges and patriarchal features. Most themes explored in this book illustrate the entangled nature of the social and regional determinants of gender and health imbalances in India. Through its rich cartography of contemporary India, the book represents the first Atlas exploiting district-level figures drawn from the latest sociodemographic survey conducted in 2019-21. After an initial methodological synopsis, the book is built around twenty chapters—illustrated by 75 original maps, figures, and tables prepared by thirty authors—and concludes with a synthesis of India's spatial patterns. Chapters engage with major themes of gender and health inequalities and explore an array of innovative indicators such as access to menstrual hygiene, cesarean deliveries, health insurance, son preference in fertility, female landownership, patrilocal systems, hypertension, anemia, hysterectomy, girl-only or single-child families, or traditional contraception. Together, they provide an often surprising glimpse into the present and future of India's gender and health landscape, highlighting the considerable progress accomplished over the last two decades alongside persistent gaps and emerging issues.

The reduction of inequalities within and between countries stands as a policy goal, and deserves to take centre stage in the design of the Sustainable Development Goals agreed during the Rio+20 Summit in 2012.The 2013 edition of A Planet for Life represents a unique international initiative grounded on conceptual and strategic thinking, and – most importantly – empirical experiments, conducted on five continents and touching on multiple realities. This unprecedented collection of works proposes a solid empirical approach, rather than an ideological one, to inform future debate.The case studies collected in this volume demonstrate the complexity of the new systems required to accommodate each country's specific economic, political and cultural realities. These systems combine technical, financial, legal, fiscal and organizational elements with a great deal of applied expertise, and are articulated within a clear, well-understood, growth- and job-generating development strategy.Inequality reduction does not occur by decree; neither does it automatically arise through economic growth, nor through policies that equalize incomes downward via ill conceived fiscal policies. Inequality reduction involves a collaborative effort that must motivate all concerned parties, one that constitutes a genuine political and social innovation, and one that often runs counter to prevailing political and economic forces.

This edited volume draws on ten original contributions that locate ethics at the centre-stage of public health practice. The essays explicate ethical issues, challenges, deliberations and resolutions covering a broad canvas of public health practice including policies, programmes, research, training and advocacy. The contributors are academics and practitioners in varying roles and long-standing engagement with public health in diverse settings within India. Their expertise in disciplines range from anthropology, sociology, health communications, gender studies, economics, epidemiology, social work and medicine. Their chapters deal with dimensions of ethical dilemmas that can rarely be defined and contained within ethical guidelines and protocols alone. Instead, they throw light on the associated factors, value systems and contexts in which such complexities occur and require response or redressal. This volume aims to articulate the growing awareness among practitioners that public health ethics is not merely an advanced grouping of possible problems and solutions. It hopes to facilitate robust platforms for dialogue and debate on the subject through the lenses of these contributions. The book is conceptualized to reach broader audiences such as public health practitioners and researchers in several roles within Government health systems, NGOs/Grass root organizations/CSR initiatives/advocacy groups; as well as researchers in academic settings and facilitators involved in teaching ethics and imparting training for students and young practitioners of public health.

This book examines the state of child health and well-being in India. It traces the roots of child health inequalities in India; draws on the latest NFHS-V, 2019–21 data; and analyses various child health and nutrition indicators from the perspective of equity and efficiency. This volume addresses various contexts and methodologies available to measure health inequalities among Indian children. It also assesses the child’s well-being in terms of “Multidimensional Child Poverty”. As a policy document, this work examines and quantifies the equity and efficiency dimensions of various child health indicators among Indian states. Assessment of between- and within-group inequalities by various socio-economic groups provides new insights into addressing the issue of health inequalities among Indian children. An in-depth work on child health and development, this book will be of great interest to scholars and researchers of health and public policy, development studies, health economics, and South Asian studies. It will also be of use to NGOs, policymakers, and think-tanks in the field.

This paper studies growth determinants in 12 Latin American countries during the period 1950-85. In a simple growth accounting framework, the share of labor in income is found to be lower in the sample group than in developed countries, while factor productivity growth accounts for a larger proportion of growth in the fastest growing countries in the sample. Using panel data, macroeconomic stability is found to play, in addition to investment (physical and human), a crucial role in growth. To a lesser extent, growth is negatively correlated with government consumption and political instability. The terms of trade appear to have no significant effect on growth.
