The conference entitled 'Where Conservation Meets Conservation', held at De Montfort University, Leicester on 9 September 2002 provided the opportunity to explore the interface between historic buildings and their contents by recognizing the interrelationships between architectural and object conservation. Within this, consideration was given to the role of conservation science and technology in achieving appropriate and sustainable solutions. The emphasis of the conference was on raising awareness at a practical interdisciplinary level and providing a platform for sharing knowledge and experience.

Welcome to the proceedings of the Third International Conference on Sustainability in Energy and Buildings, SEB’11, held in Marseilles in France, organised by the Laboratoire des Sciences del'Information et des Systèmes (LSIS) in Marseille, France in partnership with KES International. SEB'11 formed a welcome opportunity for researchers in subjects related to sustainability, renewable energy technology, and applications in the built environment to mix with other scientists, industrialists and stakeholders in the field. The conference featured presentations on a range of renewable energy and sustainability related topics. In addition the conference explored two innovative themes: the application of intelligent sensing, control, optimisation and modelling techniques to sustainability and the technology of sustainable buildings. These two themes combine synergetically to address issues relating to The Intelligent Building. SEB’11 attracted a significant number of submissions from around the world. These were subjected to a two-stage blind peer-review process. With the objective of producing a high-quality conference, only the best 50 or so of these were selected for presentation at the conference and publication in the proceedings. It is hoped that you will find this volume an interesting, informative and useful resource for your research.

This book incorporates UK and international case studies and essays to identify the overlaps in the interests of energy and building conservation. The relevance and adjustments of qualitative and quantitative frames of reference are introduced, alongside the various expertise of the contributors: architects, designers, conservation consultants and academics. The second part of the book showcases sustainable domestic and non-domestic heritage projects, translating the preceding research into information that practitioners can use in their everyday work. The book will appeal to architecture students, newly qualified professionals and conservation architects and will enhance readers’ ambitions, so that they feel equipped and inspired to work with old buildings sensitively, creatively and sustainably.
