Excerpt from Henry James a Critical Study Let me say at once that I regard the works of Mr. Henry James as those most worthy of attention by the critics - most worthy of attention of all the work that is to-day pouring from the groaning presses of continents. In saying this I conceal for the moment my private opinion - which doesn't in the least matter to anyone, though it is an opinion that can hardly be called anything but mature - that Mr. James is the greatest of living writers and in consequence, for me, the greatest of living men. I might, that is to say, have thought, as I have, that Mr. James is the greatest of living men without ever contemplating thus setting out to write a book about him. A man may be supremely great and offer no opportunity for comment of any kind. I cannot, that is to say, imagine any serious writer setting to work to say anything about Shakespeare, about Turgenieff, or for the matter of that about Nelson or Moltke. Excerpt from Henry James and the Dramatic Analogy: A Study of the Major Novels of the Middle Period In a craftsman-to-craftsman statement in a letter to Paul Bourget, Henry James remarked that questions of art and form interest me deeply - really much more than any oth er; and so, not less, do they interest you: yet, though they fre quently come up between us I nowadays never seem to see you long enough at once to thresh them comfortably out with you. Just four years later, on September 9, 1902, James reiterated his interest in the problems of the writer's craft in a note to his Rye neighbor Ford Madox Ford: Nothing is ever more interesting to me than the consideration, with those who care to see, or want to, of these bottomless questions of How, and Why and Whence and What in connection with the mystery of one's Craft. It is with this Henry James, absorbed in the novel with the dedicated interest of a pains taking maker, that this book is concerned. It discusses ques tions of How and Why and Whence and What with those who, like Bourget and Ford, are no less interested in such questions than was James himself. Excerpt from A Bibliography of the Writings of Henry James The expediency of publishing a bibliography of: the work of a living writer who shows no abate ment in his admirable practice of the story-teller's art may seem open to question. For a longer period than is accorded most authors for literary activity, Mr. James's work has been accumulating in amazing quantity in widely scattered mediums, and increasingly, with out adequate guidance, librarians are being asked to hunt it up. The following bibliography should facilitate this research and enable Mr. James's readers to find a particular title, either in periodical form, in the original collection, in a later rearrangement, or in 022 fig; the numerous reissues of groups of stories or: essays.
