"Pictures of Belonging showcases more than one hundred objects created by Miki Hayakawa, Hisako Hibi, and Miné Okubo. These trailblazing American women of Japanese descent-part of the pre-World War II generation of artists in California-were committed to exploring art as a productive means of storytelling, but their achievements are rarely recognized in the pages of American history. The book puts the artists' works in dialogue with one another for the first time-creating new conversations on citizenship, community, and agency in the historical record during an era of exclusion for Japanese Americans in particular and Asian Americans as a whole"--

"Hibi was one of Masahisa Fukase's final bodies of work. Fukase photographed street cracks and fissures between 1990 and 1992, and then hand painted a set of 10 x 8" bromide prints. The series was shown in February 1992, in his solo exhibition 'Private Scenes '92' held at the Nikon Salon in Tokyo, alongside Private Scenes, Bukubuku, and Berobero. His working life came to an end four months later, when he fell down the stairs in Shinjuku Golden Gai, Tokyo, and suffered brain damage."--Colophon.

For thirty years Margaret and Leonardo have sat each day at adjoining desks, writing postcards to famous people, without ever getting any answers. Having run out of live personages to write to they decide to address their cards to the famous dead -- but, suddenly, much to their consternation, a reply does arrive. Its effect is shattering, and brings on a poignant revelation of the unspoken feelings which have, through all the years, lay dormant beneath the calm surface of their very correct relationship.

For over forty years, professor and culinary historian Jessica B. Harris has collected postcards depicting Africans and their descendants in the American diaspora. They are presented for the first time in this exquisite volume. Vintage Postcards from the African World: In the Dignity of Their Work and the Joy of Their Play brings together more than 150 images, providing a visual document of more than a century of work in agricultural and culinary pursuits and joy in entertainments, parades, and celebrations. Organized by geography—Africa, the Caribbean, and the United States—as well as by the types of scenes depicted—the farm, the garden, and the sea; the marketplace; the vendors and the cooks; leisure, entertainments, and festivities—the images capture the dignity of the labors of everyday life and the pride of festive occasions. Superb and rare images demonstrate everything from how Africans and their descendants dressed to what tools they used to how their entertainments provided relief from toil. Three essays accompany the postcards, one of which details Harris’s collection and the collecting process. A second presents suggestions on how to interpret the cards. A final essay gives brief information on the history of postcards and postcard dating and its increasing use and value to scholars.
