Higher Education Landscape 2030

This open access Springer Brief provides a systematic analysis of current trends and requirements in the areas of knowledge and competence in the context of the project “(A) Higher Education Digital (AHEAD)—International Horizon Scanning / Trend Analysis on Digital Higher Education.” It examines the latest developments in learning theory, didactics, and digital-education technology in connection with an increasingly digitized higher education landscape. In turn, this analysis forms the basis for envisioning higher education in 2030. Here, four learning pathways are developed to provide a glimpse of higher education in 2030: Tamagotchi, a closed ecosystem that is built around individual students who enter the university soon after secondary education; Jenga, in which universities offer a solid foundation of knowledge to build on in later phases; Lego, where the course of study is not a monolithic unit, but consists of individually combined modules of different sizes; and Transformer, where students have already acquired their own professional identities and life experiences, which they integrate into their studies. In addition, innovative practice cases are presented to illustrate each learning path.

This book examines what challenges and opportunities globalisation is bringing to higher education, and as a consequence, how education might look in the future.

Demographic changes increasingly shape social policies as most OECD populations are aging and include more migrants and minorities. Japan and Korea have already started to see their enrollments in tertiary education decline, but other countries like Turkey and Mexico can still expect a boom. Drawing on trend data and projections, volume 1 takes a look at these important questions from both a qualitative and quantitative standpoint. Issues covered include the impact of demographic changes on student enrollment, educational attainment, academic staff and policy choices. Particular attention is given to how access policies determine the demographics of tertiary education, notably by examining access to higher education for disabled and migrant students. The book covers most OECD countries, illustrating the analysis with specific examples from France, Japan, Korea and the United States. The scope of contemporary higher education is wide, and concerns about the performance of higher education systems are widespread. The number of young people with a higher education qualification is expected to surpass 300 million in OECD and G20 countries by 2030. Higher education systems are faced with challenges that include expanding access, containing costs, and ensuring the quality and relevance of provision. The project on benchmarking higher education system performance provides a comprehensive and empirically rich review of the higher education landscape across OECD countries, taking stock of how well they are performing in meeting their education, research and engagement responsibilities.

The interwoven futures of humanity and our planet are under threat. Urgent action, taken together, is needed to change course and reimagine our futures.

This study provides institutions of higher learning around the world with new and inclusive guidelines that can be applied contextually to produce credible evidence regarding the outcome and impact of their teaching, research, societal-outreach, governance, and partnering activities with regard to sustainable development. The 2015 International Year of Evaluation is behind us and post-2015 Sustainable-Development Goals are coming into play. Donors, the public, international organizations, and higher-education participants need to know if universities are advancing sustainable development. Although university involvement in sustainable-development research, teaching, and outreach has increased substantially, systematic learning from higher-education engagements has been disappointing and the extent to which university initiatives have influenced sustainable development, particularly in the Global South, is widely contested. This book presents and demonstrates the utility of a flexible framework that will inspire substantial contextually based improvements in the ways universities evaluate and, therefore, activate and improve their sustainable-development undertakings. It provides a cutting-edge resource for students, scholars, university leaders, and policy drivers at all levels of governance who are concerned with contemporary higher education, sustainable development, climate change, and evaluation challenges.
