Excerpt from History of Red River Valley, Vol. 2 of 2: Past and Present; Including an Account of the Counties, Cities, Towns and Villages of the Valley From the Time of Their First Settlement and Formation There being no great amount of timber land in the county in comparison with its area, the greater portion of it lay in 1870 as wild prairie land exists in its primitive state. The natural prairie grass was short, only attaining a height suitable for use as hay in moist or wet places where there had been some gathering of the waters when the snow melted. Of wet, sedgy places, occupying shallow depressions of the prairie, there were then a far greater number Of them than there are now. Interspersed with the prairie grass there grew quite a variety of botanical plants, many of them of the owering kind. The buffalo had but recently dis appeared and had not been gone long enough for their wallows to have become grassed over or their trails obliterated, but the elk, antelope, coyote, fox, etc., still remained as denizens of the country. The gopher was not abundant, for the coyote and fox thinned their number. Thus these prairie lands lay vacant, awaiting the coming of the settler and the touch of the plow. “If I had promised to be a priest and kept my word, today I would be . . . a feted-up, high-living hypocrite in the so-called vineyard of the Lord, and not a farmer . . . earning his bread by the sweat of his brow.” Defying his Catholic parents’ insistence that he join the clergy, twenty-year-old R. M. Probstfield emigrates from the Rhineland to Minnesota. After some continental rambling and the federal government forcing Native Americans from the Red River Valley, a decade toiling for the Hudson’s Bay Company persuades him that the Valley’s rich soil offers opportunity, and as one of the earliest settlers establishes Oakport Farm near the well-timbered Red River. Documented from a multi-generational journal and illustrated with vintage photographs, By the Sweat of His Brow sets the Probstfield family’s daily activities in the context of state and national agricultural, social, and political history and opens a window on rural life at the eastern edge of the Great Plains from the mid-nineteenth to mid-twentieth centuries. This meticulously researched, eminently readable book colorfully depicts a complicated patriarch, loving wife, and eleven children eking out a living. It will appeal to history buffs and scholars alike.

The area's extreme remoteness, great size, and sparse population have shaped the North Dakota character from the beginning of settlement a century ago. Theirs was not an easy land to master; and of those who tried, it demanded strength, endurance, and few illusions, but it had rewards. Today, as world shortages of food and fuel raise new possibilities--and new problems--North Dakotans face the future with the cautious optimism they learned long ago in sod houses and cold winters on the far northern edge of their country.
