The University of Arkansas and its Razorbacks hold a special place in the hearts of Arkansans, not simply because the state has no professional sports teams, but because of the colorful players and coaches to have passed through the campus gates. Author Nate Allen chronicles the good, the bad, and the funny from Arkansas history in his second book about Razorback athletics, More Tales from Hog Heaven. Fans will be able to read more tales about the football program's adjustment in 1998 from the dour Danny Ford to the upbeat Houston Nutt, and about Lou Holtz's one-liners that seared their targets, but sometimes boomeranged. They will meet the legendary track coach who told one of his Irish athletes to row back home, and read about sportswriter Orville Henry's penchant for deflating self-important bowl officials. More Tales from Hog Heaven will prove to be a must-have addition to any Razorback fan's library.

Of The Pig Goes to Hog Heaven, the third and climactic entry in Joseph Caldwell’s charmingly boisterous Pig Trilogy, one might well repeat the most famous words of the great non-Irish wordsmith and baseball catcher Yogi Berra, “It ain’t over till it’s over.” Kitty McCloud, the trilogy’s leading lady, would let these words stand, even were she a reviser of aphorisms rather than a “fixer” of great literary works by the likes of Bronte, Hardy, and Eliot no less, by writing “improved” versions of which she makes an outsized bestselling living that affords her the dubious luxury of living in contentious bliss with her husband, Kieran Sweeney, in their ancient, haunted Irish Castle Kissane. For in Mr. Caldwell’s new comedy—well, tragicomedy, in the truly Irish sense—almost nothing seems to be over—disappeared characters rematerialize, romances that seemed dead burst back to ardent life, and even Taddy and Brid, Castle Kissane’s comely spirits, find new meaning in Yogi’s remark as they resolve themselves into much-longed-for conclusions. And the pig, ah yes, the pig! The pig who started it all by rooting up the bones of the past and tipping many lives topsy turvy—that pig goes wee wee wee all the way—er—home.

No other nonhuman source has served as the basis for more metaphors than animals. Speaking of Animals is a dictionary of animal metaphors that are current in American English. It is comprehensive, historical, and metaphor-based. Each entry refers to the other dictionaries that catalog that same metaphor, and the dates of first appearance in writing are supplied, where possible, for both the metaphor and the name of the source. The main text is organized alphabetically by metaphor rather than by animal or animal behavior; all the metaphors are classified according to their animal source in a list at the end of the book. An animal metaphor is a word, phrase, or sentence that expresses a resemblance or similarity between someone or something and a particular animal or animal class. True metaphors are single words, such as the noun tiger, the verb hog, and the adjective chicken. Phrasal metaphors combine true metaphors with other words, such as blind tiger, hog the road, and chicken colonel. Other animal metaphors take the form of similes, such as like rats leaving a sinking ship and prickly as a hedgehog. Still others take the form of proverbs, such as Don't count your chickens before they hatch and Let sleeping dogs lie. The horse is the animal most frequently referred to in metaphors, followed closely by the dog. The Bible is the most prolific literary source of animal metaphors, followed closely by Shakespeare.
