Honeybees are an essential part of farming and the wider ecosystem. Since the middle of the 1990s bee populations around the world have suffered dramatic decline through diseases, intoxication, and unknown causes. Veterinarians have had little training in bee health but as the situation continues, qualified animal health professionals and, in particular, veterinarians are being required to become involved as new dangers threaten honeybee health everywhere because of global apiculture trade and exchanges of honeybees, products of the hive and beekeeping material such as Aethina tumida (the small hive beetle - a beekeeping pest) introduced in Italy in 2014 or the mite Tropilaelaps spp (parasitic mites of honeybees). This book will provide an overview of bee biology, the bee in the wider environment, intoxication, bee diseases, bee parasites (with a large part dedicated to the mite Varroa destructor) pests, enemies, and veterinary treatment and actions relating to honeybee health. The book will also cover current topics such as climate change, crop pollination, use of phytosanitary products, antibiotic resistance, and Colony Collapse Disorder. While aimed at veterinary practitioners, students and veterinarians involved in apiculture and bee health (officials, researchers, laboratory veterinarians, biologists...), the book can also be beneficial to beekeepers, beekeeping stakeholders, animal health and environmental organisations.

Bee Genetics and Breeding provides an overview of the state of knowledge in bee genetics and breeding. The book is organized into two parts. Part I deals with the scholarly issues of bee genetics. It is intended as a reference source for students of both bees and genetics. It could also serve as a text for university courses in bee genetics. Topics discussed include the evolution of eusocial insects; geographical variability and classification of honey bees; and behavioral and biochemical genetics of honey bees. Part II deals more specifically with the practical issues of bee breeding. The discussions include the quantitative genetics of honey bees; ways to define and measure honey-bee characteristics so that the "best" parents for honey-bee stock improvement programs can be selected; and mating designs. This section contains sufficient guidance for bee breeders to initiate or improve breeding programs. Apiculturalists generally will find this part especially interesting since the quality of their own bee stock depends on the skills and knowledge of the breeders who produce their queens.

Honey bees are one of the most important agricultural animals on Earth. These tiny creatures often fly around unnoticed, doing work they have mastered to provide not only for themselves, but for the plants, animals, and humans that make up our shared home. Given the complex and increasing health challenges that honey bees face, the importance of collaborating together to develop fresh perspectives to nurture our bees cannot be understated. But do honey bees have doctors? This book compiles stories from one veterinarian's recent journey into the world of apiculture. Looking through the eyes of a doctor, Dr. Farone shares what she has discovered by studying and caring for these fuzzy little animals which have such an important impact on all our lives. Chapters or "frames" cover a wide range of topics in beekeeping, bee biology, and bee medicine. From realistic and fun advice on handling swarms, to a simple yet scientific approach to hive inspections, beekeepers, veterinarians, and anyone who loves honey bees will find the text entertaining, educational, practical, and even inspirational. References and resources are also provided for more learning direction according to the readers' desire. So come along on for the ride and shadow a veterinarian as she examines a "new" kind of patient, the honey bee.
