Hybridity In Translated Chinese

This book investigates the characteristics of hybridity in Chinese texts that have been translated from English. It also explores the potential impact of translation and hybridity on written Chinese over the past 70 years. It suggests that English-Chinese translations have introduced more and more hybrid structures into Chinese. This book can help us with understanding language change and development, and it can also shed new light on the translation process and help identify translation norms.

In Shanghai in the early twentieth century, a hybrid theatrical form, wenmingxi, emerged that was based on Western spoken theatre, classical Chinese theatre, and a Japanese hybrid form known as shinpa. This book places it in the context of its hybridized literary and performance elements, giving it a definitive place in modern Chinese theatre.

Translated fiction has largely been under-theorized, if not altogether ignored, in literary studies. Though widely consumed, translated novels are still considered secondary versions of foreign masterpieces. Readers, Reading and Reception of Translated Fiction in Chinese recognizes that translated novels are distinct from non-translated novels, just as they are distinct from the originals from which they are derived, but they are neither secondary nor inferior. They provide different models of reality; they are split apart by two languages, two cultures and two literary systems; and they are characterized by cultural hybridity, double voicing and multiple intertextualities. With the continued popularity of translated fiction, questions related to its reading and reception take on increasing significance. Chan draws on insights from textual and narratological studies to unravel the processes through which readers interact with translated fiction. Moving from individual readings to collective reception, he considers how lay Chinese readers, as a community, 'received' translated British fiction at specific historical moments during the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. Case studies discussed include translations of stream-of-consciousness novels, fantasy fiction and postmodern works. In addition to lay readers, two further kinds of reader with bilingual facility are examined: the way critics and historians approach translated fiction is investigated from structuralist and poststrcuturalist perspectives. A range of novels by well-known British authors constitute the core of the study, including novels by Oscar Wilde, James Joyce, D.H. Lawrence, Virginia Woolf, John Fowles, Helen Fielding and J.K. Rowling.

A Hybrid Approach to Teaching Chinese through Digital Humanities, CALL, and Project-Based Learning presents an exposition of current thinking, research, and best practices in Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL), Digital Humanities (DH), and Project-Based Language Learning (PBLL) in the context of teaching Chinese as a foreign language (TCFL). It proposes integrating CALL and DH into PBLL to form a Digital Humanities–Augmented Technology-Enhanced Project-Based Language Learning (DATEPBLL) approach to transform student learning. By combining DH pedagogy and CALL technology with PBLL, the approach takes advantage of their synergies, which enables instructors to help students develop linguistic and cultural competency as well as 21st century skills. Case studies and best practices from experienced Chinese language teachers are presented to demonstrate the value of the DATEPBLL approach. This is the first volume that covers all three fields and makes a strong case for the importance of incorporating CALL, DH, and PBLL for effective language learning. Written for professionals in language education, including educators, curriculum designers and developers, graduate students, publishers, government personnel, and researchers, the book provides theoretical insights and practical applications of CALL, DH, and PBLL.

This volume brings together some of the latest research by scholars from the UK, Taiwan, and Hong Kong to examine a variety of issues relating to the history of translation between China and Europe, aimed at increasing dialogue between Chinese studies and translation studies. Covering the nineteenth century to the present, the essays tackle a number of important issues, including the role of relay translation, hybridity and transculturation, methods for the incorporation of foreign words and concepts, the problems entailed by the importation of foreign paradigms and epistemes, the role of public institutions, the issue of agency, and the role of metaphors to conceptualize translation. By examining the dissemination of certain key terms from the West to the East, often through pivotal languages, and by laying bare the transformation of knowledge conveyed through these terms, the essays go well beyond the “difference and similarity” comparison model in the investigation of East-West relations, demonstrating that transcultural hybridity is a more meaningful topic to pursue. Moreover, they demonstrate how the translator, always working simultaneously under several domestic and foreign institutions, needs to resort to “selection, deletion and compromise”, in other words personal free choice, when negotiating among institutional powers.
