The series Islamkundliche Untersuchungen was founded in 1969 by the Klaus Schwarz Verlag. Since then, it has become one of the most important venues for publications in Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies. Its more than 350 volumes cover a wide range of topics from the history, culture and societies of the Middle East and North Africa as well as neighboring regions in central, south and southeast Asia.

Can we learn from history? A timely problem in the light of the recent dramatic developments in the Middle East and the immanent threat of international terrorism.The from time to time uneasy relations between the Christian West and the Islam originate in the seventh and eighth centuries and took shape in the Renaissance when for the first time in history knowledge of the "Turks" – a synonym of "Muslims" – was growing fast on the basis of first-hand experience, whether as agents of a western power, or as captives of the Turks. The Shadow of the Crescent is re-issued, because the book is concerned with the image of the "Turk" in the West after the fall of Constantinople till the beginnings of the Reformation and deals with the western attitude toward the Ottomans and the growing importance of the Islam. Certainly the problems were, and still are immense; not exactly the same, but undoubtedly comparable. At least we can learn from this book that there is nothing new under the sun.

Using evidence from contemporary printed images, Smith examines the attitudes of Christian Europe to the Ottoman Empire and to Islam. She also considers the relationship between text and image, placing it in the cultural context of the Reformation and beyond.

The confrontation between European countries and the expanding Ottoman Empire in the early modern era has played a major role in numerous fields of history. The aim of this book is to investigate the European-Ottoman interrelations from three angles. One deals with the circumstances: How did the Europeans meet the Turks in pragmatic and diplomatic connections? Another concerns imagery: how were the Turks depicted in literature and art? The third examines performativity: how were the Turks inserted into plays, operas and ceremonies? This book confronts mental, visual and embodied images with historical positions and conditions. The focus, therefore, is on the dynamic interactive processes of experience, embodiment and imagination in context. Bringing together Turkish and European scholars, it applies a number of research strategies used by historians to the history of art, literature, music and theatre. The volume contains a selection of papers presented at an international conference on "Intercultural Aspects in and around Turkic Literatures" in Nicosia in 2003. The contributions address various aspects of and views on interculturalism, cosmopolitanism, stereotypes and crosscultural literary trends in Turkic literatures and literatures in contact with Turkic culture and literatures, namely Greek, Russian, and Italian. The contributors, who come from nine different countries, examine topics from the analysis of the image of the "other" in Turkish or "neighbouring" literary texts to the investigation of literary techniques and trends as a device of interculturalism and cosmopolitanism and cover a period from the 18th to the 20th century. Also included are introductory chapters on the historical and political context of the contact areas discussed in the contributions.
