Le changement climatique a des impacts directs sur notre santé. Au-delà d'une température extérieure optimale comprise entre 20 et 25 °C, la morbi-mortalité augmente partout en France. Cela concerne particulièrement les populations vulnérables, sujets précaires ou personnes âgées, durant les phénomènes climatiques extrêmes, dont les vagues de chaleur sont parmi les plus marquants. Le nombre de régions affectées par les sécheresses augmente, la hausse des températures s'accompagne aussi d'un risque accru d'incendie et d'un déplacement des vecteurs pathogènes. Or le changement climatique a aussi des effets sanitaires indirects, en modifiant la biodiversité, la végétation ou la production agricole. Les récentes canicules en France, en Russie ou aux Etats-Unis ont à chaque fois entraîné une chute importante des productions céréalières, provoquant de sérieux problèmes d'approvisionnement et de fortes hausses des cours mondiaux. Afin de nous préparer à ces bouleversements et d'atténuer les effets du changement climatique, la réflexion doit intégrer deux paramètres : le long terme et la complexité. Il est essentiel désormais d'interpréter les interactions climat-énergie-économie-biodiversité-santé dans le cadre d'une écologie globale de la santé afin de mieux anticiper nos marges d'adaptation en situation de contraintes croissantes. L'enjeu est clair : si les températures de surface augmentent de 4 à 6 °C d'ici à la fin du siècle, il se peut que l'enchaînement des événements ne soit plus contrôlable.

Il est désormais impératif d'agir en tenant compte des interactions climat-énergie-économie-biodiversité-santé dans le cadre d’une écologie globale de la santé. L’enjeu est clair : si les températures de surface augmentent de 4 à 6 °C d’ici à la fin du siècle, il est à craindre que l’enchaînement des événements devienne incontrôlable avec des conséquences géopolitiques gravissimes. Cette étude très fouillée, fondée sur des études scientifiques avec diverses projections pour le XXIe siècle et au-delà, présente en détail, le Plan national d'adaptation au changement climatique.
