EC Directive 79/923/EEC on the quality required of shellfish waters is concerned with the protection of shellfish populations (bivalve and gastropod molluscs), rather than the quality of the harvested shellfish. The NRA monitors water quality at the 18 designated sites in England and Wales. This report looks at the responsibilities of the NRA, the implementation of the directive, water quality aspects of shellfish production, and the results of the surveys undertaken at the 18 shellfish waters.
