"In Search of a Perfect World" examines the basic questions of human life on Earth: Who are we? Where did we come from? Why are we here? And where are we going? In attempting to answer these questions, humans have formed religious, social and political groups and launched wars to remove impediments to their visions of a more-perfect world. Intentional or utopian communities have been similarly inspired. Throughout the world, many cultures have maintained a belief that the world was once a better, more harmonious place and and will be again, after some form of cataclysm and the arrival of a savior or redeemer. This phenomenon, in some societies, is known as millennialism.

"Half the Perfect World tells the story of the post-war international artist community that formed on the Greek island of Hydra. Most famously, it included renowned singer-songwriter Leonard Cohen and his partner Marianne Ihlen, as well as many other artists and writers including the Australian literary couple, Charmian Clift and George Johnston, who fostered this fabled colony.Drawing on many previously unseen letters, manuscripts and diaries, and richly illustrated by the eyewitness photographs of LIFE magazine photo-journalist James Burke, Half the Perfect World reveals the private lives and relationships of the Hydra expatriates. It charts the promise of a creative life that drew many of them to the island, and documents the fracturing of the community as it came under pressure from personal ambitions and wider social changes. For all the unrealised youthful ambitions, internal strife and personal tragedy that attends this story, the authors nonetheless find that the example of these writers, dreamers and drifters continues to resonate and inspire." -- Publisher's website.

The vision of perfectionism as a multidimensional variable has gained weight in scientific evidence as social functioning sets more rigorous performance standards of an individual or group differentiation in any field (e.g., academic, sports, work, social, religious...). There is a need to establish how we achieve the goals we set ourselves in any field of action, thanks mainly to the creation of valid and reliable instruments to measure it. In today's societies, there is an increasing emphasis on how to respond to the demands of the environment as quickly as possible, being effective and achieving the best results. The demands of the environment make it possible to stimulate contextually (if they are seen as traits) and to construct perfectionist patterns and attitudes (if they are understood as learned cognitions or behaviors), which are usually associated with agonizing feelings of devaluation, incapacity or psychological vulnerability. Perfectionists are characterized by setting their goals too high as they are always on a quest to do things perfectly. In cases where they cannot do something perfectly, they do not even try, or they live with significant suffering that floods their lives, causing feelings of dissatisfaction and affecting their self-esteem, mainly because their attention is reduced to focusing only on the end of the tasks they perform, leaving the development of the task in the background. People who seek to do things perfectly are rigid when it comes to carrying them out, causing difficulty in adapting to changes, and preventing them from enjoying the present moment or taking advantage of their mistakes to improve themselves. In the same way, we can say that they reject reality, or at least they are reluctant to experience it in a way that is very different from the way they shape it. It is impossible to make everything perfect, as all people make mistakes, but perfectionists conceive failure as an expression of their maladjustment and for this reason, they generate high levels of anxiety, becoming people who try to control everything around them.

A father explores his son’s autism, and delivers a hopeful message. A Perfect World is a unique international survey, drawing on scores of lengthy interviews conducted over four years, as well as being a moving family memoir. It offers new insights on the diagnosis of autism, intervention therapy, research and special-needs learning. It is a story that will appeal to parents, teachers, community workers, health specialists and fans of travel writing alike. "With remarkable erudition and literary elegance, David Cohen, the father of an autistic boy named Eliot, has crafted an extraordinary account of autism in his own family, and in the world. In this engaging and honest book, Cohen shows autism in all its vicissitudes in England, New Zealand, Korea, the US and Israel. A gifted writer, Cohen moves so gracefully across narratives, scientific discourses, artistic genres, historical periods and continents that you hardly notice the full force of his prose until the conclusion when, suddenly, it hits you: Cohen has made us see autism as an essential part of the human condition."
