Independent Living for Physically Disabled People was the first book to provide a comprehensive picture of the philosophy and services of independent living in the United States. It provided a beacon, usable by rehabilitation professionals and consumers, who were striving to create a path to full community integration. In the years since its publication, the independent living movement has flourished, centers have been built, and many consumers have assumed their right to make decisions regarding their own lives. Still, the foundation provided by the authors of this book continues to be useful and relevant in the new millennium. Authors, including Gerben DeJong, Lex Frieden, Denise Tate, Frank Bowe, Raymond Lifchez, Irving Zola, and Susan Stoddard describe such topics as the independent living paradigm, legislation and community organization, diverse program models, supportive environments, technology, key IL services, program evaluation, and prospects for the future.

In some Canadian provinces, people with severe physical disabilities are simply warehoused in nursing homes, where many people, especially in the age of homecare, are in the final stages of their lives. It is difficult for a young person to live in a home geared for death; their physical assistance needs are met, but their social, psychological and emotional needs are not. Jen Powley argues that everyone deserves to live with the dignity of risk. In Making a Home, Powley tells the story of how she got young disabled people like herself out of nursing homes by developing a shared attendant services system for adults with severe physical disabilities. This book makes a case for living in the community and against dehumanizing institutionalization.

“We do not need care!” is a rallying cry for disability movements. It is informed by a recognition that a lack of choice over simple care decisions – like what to eat or what to wear – is a subtle yet pervasive form of violence endured by many disabled people. Disability Politics and Care examines an independent living program to explore what happens when people with disabilities take control of their own care arrangements. Christine Kelly documents responses by a wide range of stakeholders of this program and reflects on some of its broader social and political implications.

The passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act in 1990 was hailed as revolutionary legislation, but in the ensuing years restrictive Supreme Court decisions have prompted accusations that the Court has betrayed the disability rights movement. The ADA can lay claim to notable successes, yet people with disabilities continue to be unemployed at extremely high rates. In this timely book, Samuel R. Bagenstos examines the history of the movement and discusses the various, often-conflicting projects of diverse participants. He argues that while the courts deserve some criticism, some may also be fairly aimed at the choices made by prominent disability rights activists as they crafted and argued for the ADA. The author concludes with an assessment of the limits of antidiscrimination law in integrating and empowering people with disabilities, and he suggests new policy directions to make these goals a reality.
