The book examines how the European Union, which in the past had tended to be seen by India as an undervalued partner, is now increasingly part of most conversations in fields like the economy, technology, standards, best practices, development, defence and security. The book shows that the renewed focus on Europe is the result of changing geopolitics, India’s own priorities, Europe’s growing relevance in the post-Brexit era, China’s expanding footprint in the continent, and the search for alternatives to the loss of the UK as the gateway to Europe. The uncertainty inherent in the Brexit process and with the UK ceasing/having ceased to be the traditional gateway to Europe, India has been compelled to revisit, re-examine and rethink its own policies towards Europe and search for alternatives to Britain.

This book examines the economic, political and security interests of India, Europe and the European Union towards Asia. It analyses their participation in major Asian multilateral organizations, responses to connectivity and Brussels’ differential engagement of China and India. It evaluates Indian and European/EU policy towards West Asia, the Iran Imbroglio, the Indo-Pacific and South Asia (Afghanistan, Myanmar and Kashmir). It highlights the elements of convergence/divergence and assesses the challenges and prospects of India-European cooperation in the context of a more assertive China and growing European engagement with Asia.

Rajendra K. Jain was formerly Professor and Chairperson at the Centre for European Studies, and Director, Europe Area Studies Programme, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, India. He has been the first Jean Monnet Chair in India and has most recently published India and the European Union in a Turbulent World (Palgrave Macmillan, 2020), Changing Indian Images of the European Union: Perception and Misperception (Palgrave Macmillan, 2019) and India, Europe and Pakistan (Knowledge World, 2018).

This book explores the transformation of India’s relations with Central and Eastern Europe from being a subset of Indo-Soviet relations during the Cold War to the rediscovery and rebuilding of relations with the region almost from scratch in the post-Cold War era. It examines how the combination of Brexit, the rise of China and India’s expanding geo-economic interests in Europe has led the Narendra Modi government to contemplate relations with Central Europe through a more strategic lens and treat the region as an autonomous element within India’s foreign policy rather than a footnote of its relations with other great powers. Fulfilling a long-felt gap in existing literature, this volume examines India’s political, economic, investment, defence and cultural relations with the Visegrad Four (the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia). It analyzes Indian perceptions of Central Europe and explores prospects of New Delhi’s political and economic engagement with the region. The painstakingly compiled appendices on the exchange of bilateral visits and agreements between India and the Visegrad Four would be of immense use as a handy reference to scholars, policy-makers, and other interested persons and institutions.

India and the European Union bear a particular responsibility: as international relations change, not least because of the global COVID-19 pandemic, the two largest democracies in the world have the unique potential to jointly demonstrate that trusting cooperation and mutual understanding are both indispensable and fruitful—all the more so in the context of increasing national egoism and disregard for the fundamental principles of multilateralism. This realisation is not new. Believing in the necessity and mutual benefit of close cooperation, India and the EU struck a strategic partnership in 2004. But resounding success in forging closer bilateral ties and promoting an inclusive, rules-based global order has proved elusive. Since 2016, however, the EU’s Global Strategy has offered new opportunities for a restart of European foreign policy, envisaging new partnerships and recalibrating existing ones. On India’s part, too, changing stances have presented new openings—with New Delhi criticising protectionism and calling for a strengthening of multilateralism. This timely book scrutinises the status quo and the future potential of revitalised EU-India relations. By exploring and analysing conceptual approaches to and key dimensions of the strategic partnership, including trade, climate policy and development cooperation, it evaluates the prospects for future cooperation. Lastly, it offers policy recommendations for advancing the partnership between India and the EU.

This book explores the images and perceptions of the European Union (EU) in the eyes of one of the EU’s three strategic partners in Asia in the context of its own distinct policies and identity. It fills a major gap in existing studies on how Asians perceive the EU. The book examines the perception, representation and visibility of the EU in the Indian media, among the ‘elites’ and in public opinion. It explores whether the Union’s self-proclaimed representation as a global actor, a normative power and a leader in environmental negotiations conforms to how it is actually perceived in Third World countries. The book asks questions such as, How have Indian images of Europe/European Union been changing from the 1940s to the present? What new narratives have emerged or are emerging about the EU in India? What does the rise of China mean for EU-India relations? Is the image of the EU changing in India or do old representations still persist even though the Union is acquiring a new personality in the world politics? How does India perceive Poland?

India has a multi-dimensional relationship with the Federal Republic of Germany, which is its largest trading partner within the European Union, a major source and destination of foreign direct investment, a significant donor, and an important source of technology. This timely and in-depth book examines the evolution and expansion of India's economic, political, defence, and scientific-technological relationship with Germany from 1947 to the present day. It analyses mutual perceptions, highlights the elements of convergence and divergence, and discusses the challenges and prospects in a world that is in geopolitical flux and disarray. The book argues that India and Germany have an incrementally increasing relationship with more overlapping than conflicting interests. Drawing on extensive English and German language source material, including declassified documents of the German Foreign Office, and interviews with past and present policy-makers/stakeholders, this volume fills a long-felt gap in existing literature.

In view of globalization and economic reorganization, the EU needs to take up and intensify bilateral relations to current and future superpowers, like e.g. the United States of America and China People’s Republic. Increasingly, India is both in terms of global politics and economically awaking and stepping into the first row of global powers. At least, this is what it is supposed to according to observer. Moreover, the role of a major regional actor makes up the significance of India as a strategic partner, esp. in the fight against terrorism, which haunts India in equal measure like Europe. Thus, the European Union naturally has to strengthen cooperation with India. Since the EU wisely foresaw the majority of developments, they installed the so-called regular “EU / India Summit” in June 2000 and regular talks are held now. In the following, the analysis in question will deal with the steady relationship with India and the developments within the latter. Particularly, a focus is to be laid at the trade relations between the two sides. Firstly, I want to classify this relationship into the lane of all strategic partnerships of the European Union. By this, an evaluation of this relationship in contrast to other ones ought to be achieved. Starting from this, a description of the current situation between both parties and a prospect into the future of the latter are to be carried out. After a short explanation of the methodology, the findings will be presented. Here, a track down of particular issues to improve and new cooperation fields take the centre stage. This part is followed by a conclusion and possible solutions discovered during research. Based on those, recommendations will be made aiming particularly at trade relations. The European Union keeps up relations with several countries outside the old continent, and especially constant contact with six nations, i.e. the United States, Canada, Japan, China PR, Russia, and, most recently, India. Most currently, on September 7th, 2005, the sixth “EU / India Summit” took place in New Delhi. The journey, led by British prime minister and current EU president, Tony Blair, originally began with an “EU / China Summit”. Hence, political observers had the opportunity to directly compare the two relationships.
