Excerpt from Indian Recollections Besides which, another motive powerfully ope rated in leading him to decide on the present attempt, viz. That whilst the Missionary Heralds, and other mediums of religious intelligence, fully record the success attendant on the labours of Missionaries in the East, and other parts of the World, yet very little generally is known of those details which respect social intercourse, and the every day occurrences of an Indian life. To literary reputation the Author lays not an atom of claim. He is sensible of the defects under which he labours, and therefore throws himself upon the charity of the literary world. Excerpt from Rambles and Recollections of an Indian Official The Editor's notes, being designed merely to explain and illustrate the text, so as to render the book fully intelligible and helpful' to readers of the present day, have been com pressed into the narrowest possible limits. Even India changes, and observations and criticisms which were perfectly true when recorded can no longer be safely applied without explanation to the India of to-day. The Author's few notes are distinguished by his initials. A Copious analytical index has been compiled. The biblio graphy is as complete as careful inquiry could make it, but it is possible that some anonymous papers by the Author, published in periodicals, may have escaped notice. Excerpt from Indian Stories Many years ago I lived among the Indians and knew them well. They were very different from the Indians of to-day. It would be hard now to find any Indians who are as close to the original traditions as were those old friends of mine. I want to give the boys and girls of to-day a chance to see the Indian as I saw him, and to know how he lived and what he thought. It is a pleasure to tell this story; for I came to love the Indian, and I had great respect for him and for his manner of life. When I first lived among the Dakotas, they were still strongly prejudiced in favor of the old ways, tradi tions and customs. They looked back-with regret upon earlier times, when they lived, unmolested, the wild, free life of the forests. They said that their ancestors were better men than they, because their ancestors lived closer to the Great Spirit, by whom the actions of all Indians were guided. I give the stories as they were told to me by old men who knew and loved the old-time ways, and who wanted to give me the real facts because they saw that I respected their customs and believed in them. In these stories I share with the boys and girls of to-day, who can never know the old-fashioned Indians, my recollections of a busy and happy life among them, at a time when they had not unlearned all the old customs. Excerpt from A Servant of John Company: Being the Recollections of an Indian Official Curiously enough, the last post which fell to my lot was none other than the identical J udgeship Of Saharanpore which had been held by the very gentleman whose informa tion had decided my father's wavering disposition. But times had changed. The Queen's direct administration had been followed by many changes, and amongst them had been a new rule for limiting the duration Of our period Of service. Whether a Civil Servant had saved money or not, he now had to retire on a given date. TO one having a numerous Offspring, for some only Of whom he had then been able to provide, here was a serious calamity, and it cannot be denied that in this respect at least the palmy days of the Indian Civil Service have long been no more. Excerpt from Rambles and Recollections of an Indian Official, Vol. 1 of 2 My Dear Sister, Were any one to ask your countrymen in India what has been their greatest source of pleasure while there, perhaps nine in ten would say, the letters which they receive from their sisters at home. These of all things, perhaps, tend most to link our affections with home by filling the landscapes, so dear to our recollections, with ever-varying groups of the family circles, among whom our infancy and our boyhood have been passed; and among whom we still hope to spend the winter of our days.
