Inflammatory Diseases of Blood Vessels“/b> Inflammatory Diseases of Blood Vessels Second Edition Inflammatory Diseases of Blood Vessels provides a comprehensive overview of the science and clinical consequences of vascular inflammation in health and disease. In recent years, considerable progress has been made in understanding different forms of vasculitis. Investigation of pathogenesis of vascular inflammation has led to improved treatments and outcomes. Surgical and transplant procedures have improved in parallel with medical therapies. These areas are extensively examined in this new edition. Inflammatory Diseases of Blood Vessels is an excellent resource for a broad readership, including clinicians, investigators and their support teams in numerous specialties e.g. rheumatology, immunology, cardiology, cardiovascular surgery, pulmonary medicine, nephrology, pathology, vascular biology, embryology and imaging.

This volume, written by well-known experts in the field, covers all aspects of Anti-Neutrophil Cytoplasmic Antibody (ANCA) Associated Vasculitis (AAV). The expression refers to a group of diseases, characterized by destruction and inflammation of small vessels. The clinical signs vary and affect several organs, such as the kidney, lung, skin, nervous system and others. The opening chapters give some historical hints, explain the genetic basis of the disease and provide insights into the pathogenesis derived from recent experimental studies and guides the reader through classification and nomenclature. A large part of the book is then devoted to a detailed description of the specific related diseases and their clinical presentations, the disease course, and potential complications. The advice regarding treatment is based on the best currently available evidence in this constantly evolving area. The book is part of Springer’s series Rare Diseases of the Immune System, which presents recently acquired knowledge on pathogenesis, diagnosis, and therapy with the aim of promoting a more holistic approach to these conditions. AAVs are systemic autoimmune diseases of unknown cause that affect small (to medium) sized blood vessels. They include granulomatosis with polyangiitis (formerly Wegener's granulomatosis), microscopic polyangiitis, and eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis (formerly Churg–Strauss syndrome). This volume will be an invaluable source of up-to-date information for all practitioners involved in the care of patients with these diseases.

"Vasculitis" describes an inflammatory process that involves the blood vessels and contributes to vascular damage. Autoimmunity, infections, drugs, and malignancies have been considered among potential etio-pathogenic factors. In vasculitis, the inflammation might develop in either a systemic or an organ-specific form and might exist as an independent pathology "primary vasculitis" or as a presentation of an existing primary pathology, that is, "secondary vasculitis". This book Vasculitis In Practice-An Update on Special Situations - Clinical and Therapeutic Considerations unlike many publications in the field, uses a different evidence-based approach to organ-specific vascular inflammatory diseases. The authors highlighted the unmet needs from the 1994 Chapel Hill Consensus Conference introducing the latest clinically relevant definitions for the different forms of vasculitis revised in 2012. The identification, classification, and management of kidney disease with different types of vasculitis with an evidence-based update on proposed therapeutic strategies are presented in this publication.

The microcirculation is highly responsive to, and a vital participant in, the inflammatory response. All segments of the microvasculature (arterioles, capillaries, and venules) exhibit characteristic phenotypic changes during inflammation that appear to be directed toward enhancing the delivery of inflammatory cells to the injured/infected tissue, isolating the region from healthy tissue and the systemic circulation, and setting the stage for tissue repair and regeneration. The best characterized responses of the microcirculation to inflammation include impaired vasomotor function, reduced capillary perfusion, adhesion of leukocytes and platelets, activation of the coagulation cascade, and enhanced thrombosis, increased vascular permeability, and an increase in the rate of proliferation of blood and lymphatic vessels. A variety of cells that normally circulate in blood (leukocytes, platelets) or reside within the vessel wall (endothelial cells, pericytes) or in the perivascular space (mast cells, macrophages) are activated in response to inflammation. The activation products and chemical mediators released from these cells act through different well-characterized signaling pathways to induce the phenotypic changes in microvessel function that accompany inflammation. Drugs that target a specific microvascular response to inflammation, such as leukocyte-endothelial cell adhesion or angiogenesis, have shown promise in both the preclinical and clinical studies of inflammatory disease. Future research efforts in this area will likely identify new avenues for therapeutic intervention in inflammation. Not too long ago, it was thought that inflammation of blood vessels was the sole manifestation of systemic autoimmune diseases. Today, however, we know that disorders of coagulation, injuries to both neutrophils and endothelial cells, and certain lipids and amino acids are all intricately involved in the development of vascular disease. How are all
