Information Systems And Data Analysis

This volume presents 45 articles dealing with theoretical aspects, methodo logical advances and practical applications in domains relating to classifica tion and clustering, statistical and computational data analysis, conceptual or terminological approaches for information systems, and knowledge struc tures for databases. These articles were selected from about 140 papers presented at the 19th Annual Conference of the Gesellschaft fur Klassifika tion, the German Classification Society. The conference was hosted by W. Polasek at the Institute of Statistics and Econometry of the University of 1 Basel (Switzerland) March 8-10, 1995 . The papers are grouped as follows, where the number in parentheses is the number of papers in the chapter. 1. Classification and clustering (8) 2. Uncertainty and fuzziness (5) 3. Linguistics and dialectometry (4). These chapters are interrelated in many respects. The reader may recogni ze, for example, the analogies and distinctions existing among classification principles developed in such different domains as statistics and information sciences, the benefit to be gained by the comparison of conceptual and ma thematical approaches for structuring data and knowledge, and, finally, the wealth of practical applications described in many of the papers. For convenience of the reader, the content of this volume is briefly reviewed.

Most of modern enterprises, institutions, and organizations rely on knowledge-based management systems. In these systems, knowledge is gained from data analysis. Today, knowledge-based management systems include data warehouses as their core components. Data integrated in a data warehouse are analyzed by the so-called On-Line Analytical Processing (OLAP) applications designed to discover trends, patterns of behavior, and anomalies as well as finding dependencies between data. Massive amounts of integrated data and the complexity of integrated data coming from many different sources make data integration and processing challenging. New Trends in Data Warehousing and Data Analysis brings together the most recent research and practical achievements in the DW and OLAP technologies. It provides an up-to-date bibliography of published works and the resource of research achievements. Finally, the book assists in the dissemination of knowledge in the field of advanced DW and OLAP.

Information systems belong to the most complex artifacts built in today's society. The text is designed to be used in a semester course in systems analysis and design. It introduces topics in an order most easily grasped by students: early chapters focus on feasibility studies and requirements determination, later chapters are oriented toward design specification and implementation. Systems analysis and design is a challenge for the classroom, because it is outside the context in which applications are generally created. Systems analysis and design depend on tools, situations, and experiences that are difficult to recreate in the classroom. The accompanying tools (case studies, objectives, benchmarks, etc.) have been developed to give students a practical, applications-oriented understanding of system analysis and design.

Philipp Meisen introduces a model, a query language, and a similarity measure enabling users to analyze time interval data. The introduced tools are combined to design and realize an information system. The presented system is capable of performing analytical tasks (avoiding any type of summarizability problems), providing insights, and visualizing results processing millions of intervals within milliseconds using an intuitive SQL-based query language. The heart of the solution is based on several bitmap-based indexes, which enable the system to handle huge amounts of time interval data.
