This book aims to share the theory and practice in innovative human/society-oriented information systems. The purpose of information technology is for people, communities, and societies, and we cannot ignore the human behavior and social features to design better information systems. The book includes the selected papers in the International Conference on Applied Informatics and Media Design 2019 (AIMD 2019) held at California State University, Bakersfield, USA, and International Conference on Applied Information Technologies 2021 (AIT 2021) held online, which are focused on information design, human–computer interaction, and social support systems. The book also contains multi-aspect contributions on applied informatics and media engineering, such as color design, online learning, creativity support, philosophical issues, elder treatment, AI, and business informatics.

The ICEBE conference in Windhoek is the sixth in a series of annual conferences on engineering and business education. It is organized by the Robert-Schmidt-Institute (University Wismar), hosted by Polytechnic of Namibia and co-organised by University of Applied Sciences Jena. The conferences were held in Sibiu (Romania), Manila (Philippines), Cape Town (South Africa) and Wismar (Germany). The theme of the Windhoek Conference is “Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Sustainability which describes the emphasis that is laid on always using these three terms in combination, i.e., not to consider one in isolation from the others. Thus the primary target of this conference is to provide the delegates with cross-disciplinary thinking related to the three main streams in engineering and business education.

This book highlights the latest research advances, new methods and development techniques, challenges and solutions from both theoretical and practical perspectives related to Ubiquitous and Pervasive Computing (UPC), with an emphasis on innovative, mobile and internet services. With the proliferation of wireless technologies and electronic devices, there is a rapidly growing interest in UPC, which makes it possible to create human-oriented computing environments in which computer chips are embedded in everyday objects and interact with the physical world. With UPC, people can go online even while moving around, thus enjoying nearly permanent access to their preferred services. Though it holds the potential to revolutionize our lives, UPC also poses a number of new research challenges. The book gathers the proceedings of the 11th International Conference on Innovative Mobile and Internet Services in Ubiquitous Computing (IMIS-2017), held on June 28–June 30, 2017 in Torino, Italy.

This open access book examines how the social sciences can be integrated into the praxis of engineering and science, presenting unique perspectives on the interplay between engineering and social science. Motivated by the report by the Commission on Humanities and Social Sciences of the American Association of Arts and Sciences, which emphasizes the importance of social sciences and Humanities in technical fields, the essays and papers collected in this book were presented at the NSF-funded workshop ‘Engineering a Better Future: Interplay between Engineering, Social Sciences and Innovation’, which brought together a singular collection of people, topics and disciplines. The book is split into three parts: A. Meeting at the Middle: Challenges to educating at the boundaries covers experiments in combining engineering education and the social sciences; B. Engineers Shaping Human Affairs: Investigating the interaction between social sciences and engineering, including the cult of innovation, politics of engineering, engineering design and future of societies; and C. Engineering the Engineers: Investigates thinking about design with papers on the art and science of science and engineering practice.

This book presents the latest developments in the field of biomedical engineering and includes practical solutions and strictly scientific considerations. The development of new methods of treatment, advanced diagnostics or personalized rehabilitation requires close cooperation of experts from many fields, including, among others, medicine, biotechnology and finally biomedical engineering. The latter, combining many fields of science, such as computer science, materials science, biomechanics, electronics not only enables the development and production of modern medical equipment, but also participates in the development of new directions and methods of treatment. The presented monograph is a collection of scientific papers on the use of engineering methods in medicine. The topics of the work include both practical solutions and strictly scientific considerations expanding knowledge about the functioning of the human body. We believe that the presented works will have an impact on the development of the field of science, which is biomedical engineering, constituting a contribution to the discussion on the directions of development of cooperation between doctors, physiotherapists and engineers.
