Integrated Pest Management In Tropical Regions

The implementation of Integrated Pest Management (IPM) has been a great success in temperate areas, but its role in tropical regions is less known. The tropics face specific challenges, namely weather that impacts insect life cycles and pesticide application. Beginning by reviewing the current state of pests, biological and chemical control and emerging technologies, this book then addresses specific crops, providing an up-to-date, research-oriented overview of IPM in tropical regions. This book will be a useful resource to entomologists, agronomists, horticulturists, and environmental scientists, nature conservation in tropics. The book is aimed to serve as reference book for students, teachers, researchers, extension functionaries and policy planners associated with insect pest management in tropics. This book can also be used as supplementary reading material in graduate and post graduate courses.

This book assesses the current status and future prospects for IPM in tropical regions of Asia, Africa and South America. It provides an overview of the efforts made to develop and implement IPM in the tropics. It also gives an appraisal of both the successes and failures of past IPM programmes and provides new paradigms and directions that IPM must develop

It is an edited book with chapters written by multi-disciplinary specialists in their specific subject areas. It covers development of IPM components and packaging them for individual vegetable crops specifically targeted to tropical countries. Scientific background for IPM components or tactics will be included. There will be case studies of IPM packages developed and implemented in different countries. The concept of IPM has been in existence for the past six decades; however, a practical holistic program has not been developed and implemented for vegetable crops, in the developing countries. Currently the IPM adoption rate in the tropics is minimal and there is a need for implementation of IPM technologies that are environmentally safe, economical, and socially acceptable. We believe that adoption and implementation of IPM provided in this book will lead to significant reduction in crop losses and mitigate adverse impacts of pesticide use in the tropics. This book is an outcome 20 years of research, development and implementation of the IPM CRSP, a project supported by USAID and administered by Virginia Tech in several developing countries along the tropical belt in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean. ​

Over 98% of sprayed insecticides and 95% of herbicides reach a destination other than their target species, including non-target species, air, water and soil. The extensive reliance on insecticide use reduces biodiversity, contributes to pollinator decline, destroys habitat, and threatens endangered species.
