Integrated Safety Management Process

Rising awareness of and increased attention to sexual harassment has resulted in momentum to implement sexual harassment prevention efforts in higher education institutions. Work on preventing sexual harassment is an area that has recently garnered a lot of attention, especially around education and programs that go beyond the standard anti-sexual harassment trainings often used to comply with legal requirements. On April 20-21, 2021, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine hosted the workshop Developing Evaluation Metrics for Sexual Harassment Prevention Efforts. The workshop explored approaches and strategies for evaluating and measuring the effectiveness of sexual harassment interventions being implemented at higher education institutions and research and training sites, in order to assist institutions in transforming promising ideas into evidence-based best practices. Workshop participants also addressed methods, metrics, and measures that could be used to evaluate sexual harassment prevention efforts that lead to change in the organizational climate and culture and/or a change in behavior among community members. This publication summarizes the presentations and discussion of the workshop.

Integrated Risk Management for Leisure Services provides both students and professionals with a systematic approach to safety. By integrating risk management, accident prevention, and emergency response with information on legal liability, Integrated Risk Management for Leisure Services enables leisure service providers to implement strategies to reduce or eliminate bodily injury, property damage, and financial loss. Integrated Risk Management for Leisure Services uses a four-phase integrated risk management model. The first three phases focus on negligence, the accident process, and risk management plans to reduce or eliminate injury, damage, or loss. The fourth phase focuses on what to do after an incident occurs to reduce the impact of injury, damage, or loss. Integrated Risk Management for Leisure features several unique aspects for students and professionals in the recreation and park field. It covers safety prevention and accident processes in the recreation and parks field. Then it addresses how to manage the post-incident situation to reduce impacts. Last, the text integrates these two new areas with the traditional areas of legal liability and risk management planning in an effort to provide safer recreation and park programs.

Over the years, companies have developed independent systems for managing process safety, environment, health, safety, and quality. Many aspects of these management systems are similar. Integrating EHS management systems can yield economies and improved system effectiveness.
