The promises and realities of digital innovation have come to suffuse everything from city regions to astronomy, government to finance, art to medicine, politics to warfare, and from genetics to reality itself. Digital systems augmenting physical space, buildings, and communities occupy a special place in the evolutionary discourse about advanced technology. The two Intelligent Environments books edited by Peter Droege span a quarter of a century across this genre. The second volume, Intelligent Environments: Advanced Systems for a Healthy Planet, asks: how does civilization approach thinking systems, intelligent spatial models, design methods, and support structures designed for sustainability, in ways that could counteract challenges to terrestrial habitability? This book examines a range of baseline and benchmark practices but also unusual and even sublime endeavors across regions, currencies, infrastructure, architecture, transactive electricity, geodesign, net-positive planning, remote work, integrated transport, and artificial intelligence in understanding the most immediate spatial setting: the human body. The result of this quest is both highly informative and useful, but also critical. It opens windows on what must fast become a central and overarching existential focus in the face of anthropogenic planetary heating and other threats—and raises concomitant questions about direction, scope, and speed of that change. Intelligent Environments (IEs) aims to empower users by enriching their experience, raising their awareness and enhancing their management of their surroundings. The term IE is used to describe the physical spaces where ICT and pervasive technologies are used to achieve specific objectives for the user and/or the environment. The growing IE community, from academia and practitioners, is working on the materialization of IEs driven by the latest technological developments and innovative ideas. This book presents the proceedings of the workshops held in conjunction with the 16th International Conference on Intelligent Environments (IE2020), Madrid, Spain, 20-23 July 2020. The conference focused on the development of advance intelligent environments, as well as newly emerging and rapidly evolving topics. The proceedings contain contributions reflecting the latest research developments in IEs and related areas, focusing on stretching the borders of the current state of the art and contributing to an ever-increasing establishment of IEs in the real world. It will be of interest to all those whose work involves the design or application of Intelligent Environments.

Intelligent environments (IE) combine physical spaces with ICT and pervasive technology to improve a user’s awareness of their surroundings, empower them to carry out tasks, enrich their experience, and enhance their ability to manage such environments. A growing community, from academia to practitioners, is working to bring intelligent environments to life. This work is driven by the innovative ideas and technological progress that are making the sensors and computing devices required for intelligent environments more affordable and energy-efficient. This book presents papers from Workshops held during the 17th International Conference on Intelligent Environments, IE2021. The conference was due to take place in Dubai, UAE, but was held as a virtual event from 21 to 24 June 2021 due to the restrictions associated with the Covid-19 pandemic. Included here are the proceedings of the 10th International Workshop on the Reliability of Intelligent Environments (WoRIE’21), the 3rd International Workshop on Intelligent Environments and Buildings (IEB’21), the 1st International Workshop on Self-Learning in Intelligent Environments (SeLIE’21), and the 1st International Workshop on Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning for Emerging Topics (ALLEGET’21). The contributions to these workshops reflect the multi-disciplinary and transversal aspects of intelligent environments, and cover the latest research and development in intelligent environments and related areas, focusing on pushing the boundaries and contributing to the establishment of intelligent environments in the real world. Offering a state-of-the-art overview of current progress, the book will be of particular interest to all those working in the field of intelligent environments.

The environment, as modified and created by people, is largely about the use of information, its generation and exchange. How do recent innovations in the technologies of information management and communication affect our use of space and place, and the way we perceive and think about our surroundings? This volume provides an international, exploratory forum for the complex phenomenon of new information and communication technology as it permeates and transforms our physical world, and our relation to it: the architectural definition of our surrounding, geographical space, urban form and immediate habitats. This book is a reader, an attempt at registering disciplinary changes in context, at tracing subtexts for which most mainstream disciplines have no established language. The project is to give voice to an emerging meta-discipline that has its logic across the specializations. A wide range of professionals and academics report findings, views and ideas. Together, they describe the architecture of a postmodern paradigm: how swiftly mutating the proliferating technology applications have begun to interact with the construction and reading of physical space in architecture, economics, geography, history, planning, social sciences, transport, visual art - but also in the newer domains that have joined this spectrum through the very nature of their impacts: information technology and telecommunications. The space navigated in this volume is vast, both in physical terms and in its virtual and analogous form. It ranges from the space that immediately encompasses, or is simulated to encompass, the human body - as in buildings and virtual tectonics - to that of towns and regions. We stay clear of molecular-scale space, and of dimensions that are larger than earth.

Intelligent Environments (IE) play an increasingly important role in many areas of our lives, including education, healthcare and the domestic environment. The term refers to physical spaces incorporating pervasive computing technology used to achieve specific goals for the user, the environment or both. This book presents the proceedings of the workshops of the 9th International Conference on Intelligent Environments (IE ‘13), held in Athens, Greece, in July 2013. The workshops which were presented in the context of this conference range from regular lectures to practical sessions. Relatively new research ?elds such as ambient intelligence, intelligent envir- ments, ubiquitous computing, and wearable devices have emerged in recent years. These ?elds are related by a common theme: making use of novel technologies to enhance user experience by providing user-centric intelligent environments, - moving computers from the desktop and making computing available anywhere and anytime. It must be said that the concept of intelligent environments is not new and beganwithhomeautomation. Thechoiceofnameforthe?eldvariessomewhatfrom continent to continent in the English-speaking world. In general intelligent space is synonymous to intelligent environments or smart spaces of which smart homes is a sub?eld. In this collection, the terms intelligent environments and ambient int- ligence are used interchangeably throughout. Such environments are made possible by permeating living spaces with intelligent technology that enhances quality of life. In particular, advances in technologies such as miniaturized sensors, advances in communication and networking technology including high-bandwidth wireless devices and the reduction in power consumption have made possible the concept of intelligent environments. Environments such as a home, an of?ce, a shopping mall, and a travel port utilize data provided by users to adapt the environment to meet the user’s needs and improve human-machine interactions. The user information is gathered either via wearable devices or by pervasive sensors or a combination of both.
