Intelligent Environments 2021

Intelligent environments (IE) combine physical spaces with ICT and pervasive technology to improve a user’s awareness of their surroundings, empower them to carry out tasks, enrich their experience, and enhance their ability to manage such environments. A growing community, from academia to practitioners, is working to bring intelligent environments to life. This work is driven by the innovative ideas and technological progress that are making the sensors and computing devices required for intelligent environments more affordable and energy-efficient. This book presents papers from Workshops held during the 17th International Conference on Intelligent Environments, IE2021. The conference was due to take place in Dubai, UAE, but was held as a virtual event from 21 to 24 June 2021 due to the restrictions associated with the Covid-19 pandemic. Included here are the proceedings of the 10th International Workshop on the Reliability of Intelligent Environments (WoRIE’21), the 3rd International Workshop on Intelligent Environments and Buildings (IEB’21), the 1st International Workshop on Self-Learning in Intelligent Environments (SeLIE’21), and the 1st International Workshop on Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning for Emerging Topics (ALLEGET’21). The contributions to these workshops reflect the multi-disciplinary and transversal aspects of intelligent environments, and cover the latest research and development in intelligent environments and related areas, focusing on pushing the boundaries and contributing to the establishment of intelligent environments in the real world. Offering a state-of-the-art overview of current progress, the book will be of particular interest to all those working in the field of intelligent environments.

Intelligent Environments (IE) play an increasingly important role in many areas of our lives, including education, healthcare and the domestic environment. The term refers to physical spaces incorporating pervasive computing technology used to achieve specific goals for the user, the environment or both. This book presents the proceedings of the workshops of the 9th International Conference on Intelligent Environments (IE ‘13), held in Athens, Greece, in July 2013. The workshops which were presented in the context of this conference range from regular lectures to practical sessions. They provide a forum for scientists, researchers and engineers from both industry and academia to engage in discussions on newly emerging or rapidly evolving topics in the field. Topics covered in the workshops include artificial intelligence techniques for ambient intelligence; applications of affective computing in intelligent environments; smart offices and other workplaces; intelligent environment technology in education for creative learning; museums as intelligent environments; the application of intelligent environment technologies in the urban context for creating more sociable, intelligent cities and for constructing urban intelligence. IE can enrich user experience, better manage the environment’s resources, and increase user awareness of that environment. This book will be of interest to all those whose work involves the application of intelligent environments.

The term Intelligent Environments (IEs) refers to physical spaces in which IT and other pervasive computing technologies are combined and used to achieve specific goals for the user, the environment, or both. The ultimate objective of IEs is to enrich user experience, improve management of the environment in question and increase user awareness. This book presents the proceedings of the following workshops, which formed part of the 12th International Conference on Intelligent Environments (IE16), held in London, UK, in September 2016: the 5th International Workshop on Smart Offices and Other Workplaces (SOOW’16); the 5th International Workshop on the Reliability of Intelligent Environments (WoRIE’16); the 1st International Workshop on Legal Issues in Intelligent Environments (LIIE’2016); the 2nd International Symposium on Future Intelligent Educational Environments and Learning (SOFIEE’16); the 2nd International Workshop on Future Internet and Smart Networks (FI&SN’2016); the International Workshop on Intelligent Environments Supporting Healthcare and Well-being (WISHWell’2016); the International Workshop on Computation Sustainability, Technologies and Applications (CoSTA’2016); the Creative Science 2016 (CS’16) and Cloud-of-Things 2016 (CoT’16); the Workshop on Wireless Body Area Networks for Personal Monitoring in Intelligent Environments (WBAN-PMIE); and the Physical Computing Workshop. The workshops focused on the development of advanced intelligent environments, as well as newly emerging and rapidly evolving topics, emphasizing the multi-disciplinary and transversal aspects of IEs, as well as cutting-edge topics. The book will be of interest to all those whose work involves them in the use of intelligent environments.

The promises and realities of digital innovation have come to suffuse everything from city regions to astronomy, government to finance, art to medicine, politics to warfare, and from genetics to reality itself. Intelligent Environments (IEs) aim to empower users by enriching their experience, raising their awareness and enhancing their management of their surroundings. The term IE is used to describe the physical spaces where ICT and pervasive technologies are used to achieve specific objectives for the user and/or the environment. The growing IE community, from academia to practitioners, is working on the materialization of IEs driven by the latest technological developments and innovative ideas. This book presents the proceedings of the workshops held in conjunction with the 15th International Conference on Intelligent Environments (IE’19), Rabat, Morocco, 24 – 27 June 2019. The conference focused on the development of advanced intelligent environments, as well as newly emerging and rapidly evolving topics. The workshops included here emphasize multi-disciplinary and transversal aspects of IEs, as well as cutting-edge topics: the 8th International Workshop on the Reliability of Intelligent Environments (WORIE'19); 9th International Workshop on Intelligent Environments Supporting Healthcare and Well-being (WISHWell'19); 5th Symposium on Future Intelligent Educational Environments and Learning (SOFIEE'19); 3rd International Workshop on Intelligent Systems for Agriculture Production and Environment Protection (ISAPEP'19); 3rd International Workshop on Legal Issues in Intelligent Environments (LIIE'19); 1st International Workshop on Intelligent Environments and Buildings (IEB'19); 3rd International Workshop on Citizen-Centric Smart Cities Services (CCSCS'19); and the 4th International Workshop on Smart Sensing Systems (IWSSS'19). Intelligent environments represent an emerging topic in research. Next Generation Intelligent Environments: Ambient Adaptive Systems will cover all key topics in the field of intelligent ambient adaptive systems.
